.....on my 88 there is a button in the center compartment as well as i on each of the door manel edges that wil open the hatch.......there is also the "trip-wire" underneath the back deck carpet at the shade that works also....

The wire should have a small loop at the end. Take the ring from a key chain and attach it to the wire. Makes the wire much easier to grab when you have to open the hatch manually
