Default New overdrive ?

Should the OD Dash light come on when the engine gets hot enough or should it come on as soon as you push the on button.

Thanks,

Hugh

Engine must warm up for a few minutes before the OD will engage.

Yea, I think he's asking if the od lite turns on when the switch is turned on before the engine warms up. I don't think it does but I'm not sure.

according to this website, which i found about a year ago a '84 has to hit 176 degrees before OD kicks in http://www.5speeds.com/43table.htm it says my '87 has to hit 122 for the OD to engage and that's exactly what it does...

I know the temperatures were different through the years but my 87 will not go into OD until the coolant hits 50 CELCIUS (I'm Canadian).

Minimum coolant temp for overdrive to come on:

84... 176F
85... 140F
86+...122F

The overdrive dash light is wired to the same circuit as the overdrive. It only goes on when the computer is trying to turn on the overdrive.

Gear, speed, coolant temp, and overdrive enable switch are just inputs. The computer decides based on all those inputs. The temp you see on the dash vs. the temp the computer sees are from different sensors, so ~5 degrees of error is normal.

If you're Canadian, turn the English/metric switch to english mode to see what those temps translate to. If you only speak French, then you're on your own.

One reason to never ever run a 160 stat in a '84 4+3.

Even the 180F thermostat is too close for comfort. And the high flow stats tend to open a little earlier than advertised.

Throttle position is also an input. The table in the posted link shows what throttle position in 1st gear you need to hit in order for the OD to not engage until you shift into 4th gear. This does depend on the year so it' snot the same for all 4+3 OD's.

The fact that your OD unit works sometimes may be due to a loose wire at the connector to the OD relay or possibly the wire going into the OD case. These are common areas for OD problems especially when the OD unit does work even if it's sporadic

As does my '86E - OD comes on right at 121 or 122, it could have gone to 122 by the time it took me to look at the temp.
