Hi, Merrick...I've got a '96 vert and my rear window is not tinted...just the side windows and a strip on the windshield (at either 25% or 30%). I'm thinking there is a reason the rear window wasn't done so I plan on leaving it.
Tint it...it looks better and helps keep the inside cooler and less fade......no problem with defroster.......
The back maynot have been done because it takes skill to get it doen in one piece of tint, it is still not very easy using two pieces.
My wiindo came tinted.Did not like it in the begening. But after a while you
get used to it .It the best at night it really keeps the glare down from othe cars in your rear view.Keeps car coolerand its hard to see inside at night .DO IT you wont be sorry  :smash: :flag
I wouldn't tint the rear window if you drive over the speed limit on the interstates. Makes it damn near impossible to tell a cop from a citizen. Add in a few raindrops and you lose all vehicle distinction. Night is even worse. If you don't speed; no problem. But if you are a driver who likes to let it rip, well, being forced to drive a Vette at the speed limit (because you are unsure if a car an 1/10th mile back is a cop or not) is a maddenning experience. Particularly in the northeast where its cloudy a lot.
And if you live where its extremely hot, well, it probably outweighs the risk of losing your license. Backing up at night becomes a problem too. But that's a pretty minor issue.
I removed my tint 2 weeks after I put it in. And what a pain in the a_s_s ! Oh, it looked cool alright. But its the biggest performance de-enhancer money can buy. Might as well drop in a V6 along with the tint. They compliment each other quite well.

92 white/red; 6-speed; ripper; gs-brakes; no tint anymore
How did you manage to take the tint off the back window without destroying the rear defroster or leaving residue from the glue? The tint on the rear window of my car is beginning to peel off. It looks terrible and is flapping in the breeze when the windows are open. You can only turn the stereo up so loud...
Thanks for the input. The problem with ordinary tint is removing it after is faded or scratched. With the defroster, how do you get it off? Is there a method or new kind of tint?
Well, my tint was only on several weeks.
Rubbing alcohol did the best job for me removing the rear tint.
I hear there are better liquids available for this if you have tint that has been on there for a while. It is a real arm breaker on that rear window! Probably best to take the hatch off the car so you can put some muscle into it.

I know you guys are not going to believe this but here goes. I took my back window out and used paint stripper on it...yep..paint stripper. Worked like a jewel. No harm to the glass, defogger or the black tint around the edges.
During the process of a color change, I took my rear window back to my tinter and had it re-done. It's in three pieces..but spliced on the de-fogger lines. Looks nice. Ray-Ban 20% Metallic. Gotta re-do the side windows though...The new side weatherstripping is lower, and there was a gap where the old stripping settled. Tint is awesome! I feel naked without it.
Wow,
So many negative remarks about window tinting.
Is someone getting paid to just say No? lol j/k
You guys make me want to think twice about tinting mine.
It's been going thru my head for a year now, I just haven't
gotten to doing it, and the car is in the garage about 6 days out of the week.
I have a feeling i'm going to end up doing it at some point, Heck,
Corvettes have 4 back up lights, two in back and two in the sides.
