I did not know about this option. I'll look into it. Is there a specific charger that has a line out? So a fella could just run a line from the line out on the charger to the tape adapter?
The headphone adapters for the iPhone look like ****. I can't do it.
Sleesa Staka! Sleesa Staka!
I just bought the "universal dock" through the apple store today, because it includes a remote. This way I can just throw the iphone in the dock, and keep the remote in the Vette. It was 49.99 through the apple store.
I have not tested the remote yet, with the iphone, but I have tested the dock. The iPhone does NOT go into airplane mode when a headphone cable is hooked up to the line out. So far, I think this is my final solution. This will let me keep the dock in the Vette and make it so all I have to do is put the phone into the dock when I am ready to listen to it.
I believe the music will "mute" for a second when a call is coming in, and the ringtone will play through the car speakers. I have not tested this, but when I used the headphones during my workouts, this is what happened. I have not tried answering a call while this is hooked up, however, so I can not tell you how that will go.
I really like this solution so far, and can't wait to test it out some more.
It will be several weeks before I get to play around with my new dock and my Vette, so I figured I'd ask for everyone else's sake. Ok, and because I'm dying to know too. I can't wait to try it out, and now I have to wait weeks.
CSS996 - I forgot to mention that the charging dock that came with your iphone has a line out. It does not have a remote control, however. That's why I picked up the new one today.
hey I use the tape deck with the funny cord coming out of the tape and it works just fine for me plus the cost is perfect being a fellow poor college student. only problems i have found is it tends to play back at a lower volume than the radio and if it gets too too hot (rarely) the auto reverse will try flipping the tape a few times. also i don't like how the antenna stays up when i use the ipod but that is an easy fix with antenna bypass switch u can find a thread about that on here easy.
I tried this and could not get it to work. Could you give some more details.
I DON'T KNOW WHAT TO TELL YOU, MIND WORKS FINE. DO YOU HAVE THE CORRECT RADIO INSTALLED WITH THIS ITEM, CAUSE IT HAS A BUILT IN MODULATOR.
THEY HAVE A GREAT TECH SUPPORT, GIVE THEM CALL. I KNOW TRIED A LOT OTHER PRODUCTS ALL WIRELESS, AND THEY DIDN'T WORK. I WENT TO LOCAL STORE AND BOUGHT ALL THEY HAD, WENT INTO THE PARKING LOT AND TRIED THEM ALL. I RETURNED THEM ALL CAUSE I COULDN'T EVEN LEAVE PARKING LOT CAUSE THEY WHERE BREAKING UP WITH STATIC. THE AREA I LIVE POPULATED WITH RADIO STATION, THAT IS WHY I WENT HARD WIRE, THAT HAVE NO PROBLEMS.
I'm thinking of getting an iPod. Probably an 80 GB Classic. I have the stock, Delco Bose Gold Series CD/Cassette in my '93. I'm wondering what the best way is to play the iPod in my car. I can be fairly picky about sound quality and there are some methods that just sound like crap in my friends' cars... of course, none of them have C4's though! And I am a fairly poor college student so I can't just go out and get a new stereo system.
So what are you iPod users doing? How's the quality? How was the cost?
And on a side note, any advice on chosing an iPod? I like the idea of the 80 GB because I'll be able to use it as a back-up hard-drive for my computer and store my pictures and such on it and it seems like more value at $250 for 80GB classic than $200 for an 8GB nano.
Thanks in advance!
I use a cassette adapter for my Ipod, sound quality is as good or better than listening to a cassette.

Oh oh oh! I got it now... I didn't realize you meant the home-type cradle that came with the phone. That's an interesting idea. You just have to pair that with a cigarette lighter charging unit, which I do have.
I may give that a shot. I wish the unit that came packaged with the iPhone had the remote with it. That's pretty slick! I wish it came in black though... I suppose an industrious fella could paint it in a luxurious flat black color. I wonder if the outside shell comes off of that as easy as the original dock that came with my 3rd Gen iPod? Hmmmm.
Well, my new 80 GB Classic is on its way and should arrive Wednesday. I've always been suspicous of iPods... too much like the seashells in Fahrenheit 451 but my distaste for having to tote around a ton of CDs finally got the best of me. Now I have the joys of putting all my old CDs on iTunes... I never really got around to putting 3/4 of them on and I'm thinking I'm very glad I went with the 80 GB Classic for the space and the better sound quality.
My dad has a few cassette adapters laying around that he hasn't used in years and I grabbed the one I knew worked best (played lots of Beatles on family trips in the old truck using that one) and an old radio with a headphone jack to give it a test and it sounded pretty dang good! For now anyways... later I can get picky and save and upgrade the whole sound system if I so wish. Thanks for all the advice guys!
Exactly. I was going to just the original dock, because I have an extra one due to the bluetooth headset I bought with it, but then I got to thinking about keeping my eyes on the road instead of looking at the touch screen. So I figured if there was one with a remote, why not get that one. 50 bucks later, I think I have a pretty good solution on my hands. And of course, it's not just for the iphone, since it's a universal dock.
Anybody can use this, really. If you want to use a cassette adapter, plug it into the dock's line out. If you want to use your head unit's line in, do that. I think having a separate remote for the ipod is a good solution to keep your eyes off of it.
I completely forgot about this thread, so I thought I'd update it with pictures of my current set up. I'm going to be replacing the head unit this christmas with a single-DIN GPS/bluetooth/dvd/kitchen unit. JVC KD-NX5000, but for now this set up is keeping me going. You can use a charger in the back, as I did for a while, but once I found out what I was getting, I put the charger in my daily driver, and left the rest in the Vette.
This lets me use the apple remote to control my music, and with where I put the headphone jack, it's quite literally drop and play. I don't have the iphone adapter in the dock, because I usually keep the iphone in a case. I just didn't have it in the case for this picture.
Interesting... I'm not really driving the Vette now, so I haven't played with mine at all. I have an '89 Amigo that looks almost brand new that I love almost as much as my Ruby. I just put a decent Pioneer head unit in that. I need to find out if that head unit has Bluetooth. It sure has everything else...
Keep those cool ideas coming!
I'm probably gonna end up doing a touch screen double din unit in the Vette later. Gonna be costly, as I'll need new speakers, amps and everything...
wait a year or maybe two. soon there will be car stereo units with storage capacity for mp3. mitshubishi, ford and i think suburaru now have them in their cars. as nationwide wireless acess gets better and better you will soon see units that will have the ability to surf the net and download. then they will add gps capability. soon, i suspect pioneer, will put this all toegether. i cant believe it hasnt been done yet. it is coming.
Our 85 only has the Delco / Bose cassette. We have tried both the FM transmitter and cassette adapter. Both work good. We use the transmitter one now. We have no problems. It sounds as good as the stock radio can deliver.
I thought the Bose system sounded good, but it could be better. I took the entire system out. I ran a Pioneer deck ($150), 4 alpine speakers ($130), and new wiring ($10). It sounds substantially better than the stock system and even a subwoofer could be added if I wanted to. There is a jack in the deck for an iPod too.
I have my sirius radio hard wired into my Bose reciever, and I have configured an input cable that I can plug into the back of the Sirius unit to listen to my PocketPC/Phone. Mp3s from my phone sound as good as any CD or FM Station.
I do plan on putting a DVD Satelite system into my Vette in the summer as I have been spoiled by the one in my Daily Driver. It has everything but the kitchen sink built right in. I love it and have thought about taking out and putting it in the Vette, but I don't drive the Vette enough to justify that.
I have the Bose CD/Casette in my car, but the CD doesn't work. I keep an iPod video 60G in the Vette, and run it through the casette player. It sounds pretty darn good to me!
Transmitters suck. Don't bother.
I wish my iPhone's headphone jack wasn't recessed, so I could use my cassette adapter with it. Stupid iPhone....
Other than that, the phone is awesome! Alien freakin' technology!
Anyway, try the cassette route. Only a couple bux and sounds good. At least until you completely gut the Bose and get an integrated system!
I just too a trip down to Auburn, IN from Wisconsin and i took our company van with a cassette player. I picked up a kit for connecting the IPod thru the cassette deck that even came with a usb plug to plug the ipod into the cigarette lighter and it sounded really nice. THis was a Chrysler minivan so i'm sure it'll sound ALOT better running thru the Bose setup on the Vette.
