What is safe to use to clean the black crud out of the inside of the intake plenum? I don't want to damage the aluminum or affect any of the factory finish on it. Soap & water didn't affect it in the least! I have a parts washer with grease solvent (not sure if that will break down carbon), or I can use throttle body cleaner? The TB is Alum, so that should be OK shouldn't it? BTW, TB cleaner affects the paint on the top TPI plate on the TB. Usually I use Easy off oven cleaner for really crudded up stuff - but that etches Aluminum so I figure I should pass on that. Thanks, ~Juliet
I see you are still working on the top end. How goes it BTW? Get the EGR situation taken care of? Anyways, I sprayed TB cleaner on the inside and used a toilet bowl brush for scrubbing. I cut the brush's head so the bristles were a straight row and not a u-turn shape. The bristles are "shapeable" to the nooks and crannies. Does this make me a "bubba" as you say? Jeez I hope not! :D

Yes. Just call me the world's slowest mechanic wanna-be. I've been taking my time cleaning, and cleaning and cleaning.... On my 3rd roll of paper towels so far. I don't think any of the nooks and crannies in this engine bay were ever cleaned before.
As for the EGR - yes, I think it's taken care of. I installed the new EGR valve. Finally found a wrench which would work to tighten the back bolt - one of the teeny 3/8" Ignition wrenches - very short & flat so it just managed to fit in there, plus it's a 12 point wrench. :yesnod: I don't know if you saw my post about the TB bolt I broke off while trying to remove it. So, I need to get new bolts for that since the old ones were pretty corroded anyways - beyond my comfort level for reusing them. I hope the parts dept has them in stock! Thanks for the cleaning tip. I think I need to get another can or two of TB cleaner - I almost used the whole thing up on the TB!!! Those fumes will make you high! :p: Thanks! ~Juliet
