Default Battery Tender

I bought a battery tender which works well. Why does the negative lead have to be clamped to metal chassis/engine and not the negative post of the battery?

They say to do that to avoid a spark near the battery which can cause an explosion

Hydrogen and oxygen gas come out of a lead acid battery and a spark near the battery can cause an explosion of these gases.

Gel batteries are lead acid batteries with the acid contained in a gel instead of being a liquid. If you think your gel battery doesn't emit hydrogen and oxygen, you would be thinking incorrectly!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
