Both of my cooling fans seem to have gone on strike. I know at least one was running yesterday as it has a squeak and I heard it winding down at Starbuck's. I tested both fuses for the fans near the battery for continuity and they appear fine. I presume that the fans are controlled somehow by the ECM or a sensor. Can anyone point me in the right direction as to where to look for the sensor?
I know that this car is very complex regarding the electical system and that the ECM manages just about about everything. I have had some other problems that seem electrical in nature and was wondering if they may be related to the ECM somehow:
The door, light, and key warning chimes have been either none existent or very weak cutting on and off in operation.
At times the temp control on the AC refuse to go up or down.
The right side headlamp motor cycles about 5 seconds longer than the left. It also cycles by itself when going from running lights to off.
You are going to need a 1996 FSM or have someone post the diagnostics to fix this issue correctly. My guess is that if the fuses are fine and the fans work when applying a ground and 12v....then check the relays. Not sure where they are located on the 96. Yes, the PCM controls both fans on your car.
In the name of reliability, I replaced both fan motors on my 1990. They weren't that expensive to purchase or time consuming to install. I purchased them at my local dealership for $77 each. They were wore out - I could hear the bearings squeal in them when I turned the car off. I could tell that the new ones were much smoother and even turned faster. Just a little FYI.
