I've been looking into it. And if you want something other than bose its going to be a pain. I was told that I would need a new head unit, run new speaker wires, and custom fit speakers due to the size of the bose. If your speakers are working fine you could get head unit refurbished.
Defiantely go aftermarket. I made the mistake of replacing the radio receiver portion ($130), only to have the headunit itself go out about a year later. I bought the adapter to hook the aftermarket unit up to the BOSE speakers, only to have the BLOWS amps die after a couple of months. :mad :mad :mad
Go aftermarket, it was the best mod I have done to my 85. The staging is 200 times better than what I ever had with the Blose. I have a demo song I use, I'm a Man by Chicago(remake of Winwood's song), and people are amazed, you feel like you are on stage with the band. Same thing goes for Hotel California from HFO. It feels like I am standing next to Don Henley while he is singing and then next to Joe Walsh during his solo.
I am running a Blaupunkt HU(I had it from a previous car) 5 1/4's in the doors, 4x6's in the dash and 6x9's in the rear. All Infinity Kappa's, with an Alpine 4x75W amp underneath the passenger seat. I might try separates for the door and dash, just to see if anything improves the staging.

If you don't mind me asking, about how much did all that cost you? Did you do most of the work yourself or let someone else do it?
I went with the Alpine 7878 MP3 HU, it is arguably the best MP3 deck you can get right now. It retails for about $800, but I got it off of ebay for $560. Down side is it is green only and you have to cut the dash to get it in.
Then I bought the speakers and amp used in the local want ad for $550. They are Boston Acoustics 6.5 pro series seperates, 10" Boston Acoustic Sub in a bandpass enclosure, and the amp is a hifonics 4X50 + 1X200. The front speakers sell for $550 new, so used you can get a good deal!
I ran wire to the back speaker area, but I don't intend on installing any until I have heard the system with just the fronts and the sub going. I should have it finished this week. It is a big job, you have to make cusom enclosures, and rip out a lot of interior to snake the cables. Getting the antenna cable off of the old reciever under the dash was no picnic either.
You need to talk to DrDons at http://www.drdons.com
There is nothing that will look as good as your Bose stereo in the car at a reasonable price. I added up all the numbers, spoke to Don and stuck with my Bose GOLD system. I did send ALL my amps to him for upgrade\repair as well as the head unit. When I got it back and re-installed (real easy with stock stuff) it sounded great! That system puts out more power and bass than some very expensive aftermarket stereos. I did add some tweeters on the rear. I could not find a reasonably priced Double DIN sized MP3 player. I like the Bose now, and it has the factory look which matches the dash.
The same Pioneer Double DIn Head Unit that sells in MAD And ECKLERS for about $500 big-uns........sells in the SUMMIT Catalog for $300! Do your homework..........it pays off in the end!!!!!
It has been awhile, but the 5 1/4's cost me about $125, the 6x9's cost me $200, the 4x6's cost me $110(??) Might have been less. The amp, I think was $225. Wiring and connectors about $25. I think my first cut at it was just under $500 with the HU included
I actually built it over time. the only thing left out of the original install are the 6x9's.
Initially I went with the HU, 4" door and 6x 9's. I added the amp about 3 months later(not enough volume). Added the 4x6's a few month's later, then then one of the door speakers went bad, so i said screw it, let's go bigger....
