Was cleaning the underside of my hood with Greased Lightning cleaner when I noticed it was taking the black paint off!!!!! Is there a specific kind of paint I should use to repair the damage?
Thanks to all!
What are some GOOD products to use to clean under the hood and in the wheel wells? Any products to put on after cleaning?
If I could ever figure out how to post a picture on here, I would show you that I have a daily driver with a spotless engine compartment and honestly, this is what I finally have settled on to do my detailing. I use Fantastic,Simple Green, and or Windex for all of the cleaning. I VERY CAREFULLY and with low mist pressure, rinse off everything AFTER I cover the coil, and ignition module. Now get this...I have used all sorts of products to get a wet look shine on hoses and the underside of my hood and the last thing I used, worked the best...Pledge furniture polish. It looks great. Try it. It's low budget and works. :yesnod:
Tell you what, I am truly not very well versed when it comes to paint. I have a friend that is soon going to be shooting his hood underside for the same reason. His AC unit was throwing goo up on the hood and when he tried to wash it off, the paint came with it. Also, it looks like the robot had a bad day because there were places that did not appear to have ever been sprayed (I assume "robot" because no human would do that ...would they?). My task will be limited to helping him take off and put on the hood. I am pretty sure the paint is actually egg-shell or whatever and not gloss or flat. (it very much resembles the paint I bought for the gauge cluster on my '75. I'd be afraid to even try to recommend anything to you for that. I am not sure a touch up would come out very well. Maybe it's time to customize ??? Come up with something cool to individualize the hood. (sorry to you purists) Good luck. :seeya
That would be why there is a warning on the greased lightning container saying "not for use on painted surfaces"
It does a good job for a lot of things, never had any trouble with it, I've just avoided painted surfaces. My dad tried to use it on an old volt-meter the other day, now it doesn't have any letters. :smash: :smash: :smash:
I'm sorry it screwed you up man, let us know how you fix it.
i have painted my hood and other compartments with the spray paint from advanced auto parts. the high gloss for autos looks good. comes in different colors and its cheap. my engine looks new..
Nathan.......I see that warning NOW.....I really think it should have been PRINTED IN BIG LETTERS on the FRONT of the product!!!!!!!!
