i was thinking of changing console and boot also. what does this job entail. is it inevitable there will be a problem. any posts to assist me would be great. i looked but the search isnt what it used to be. not much comes up even in archieve
You will need to remove the center armrest. Next remove the screws in the cupholder area and at the rear of the shifter plate. Remove your shifter handle up top. The shifter plate and boot pretty much lift off but you will have to disconnect the solenoid wires to the hatch release, and I believe the cigarette lighter assembly up front first. If it doesn't lift off you you have missed a screw somewhere. Once you get it off you will see that the shifter boot are held on to the bottom of the shifter plate with these cheap metal brackets that don't seem to reattach well to a new shifter plate if you replace it. Next time I have mine off I'm going to superglue those. Its not a difficult job, just take your time with it.
From: No more yankee my wankee, the Donger is tired!
93 you don't need to remove the center armrest/console door.
3 screws/bolts that hold it in. One underneath the ash try (or the forward most cup holder) and then the two in the rear at the corners inside the storage area. Just peel back the black felt a little.
It is a really easy job to do. I replaced my boot with one from Redline Goods and my **** with a custom job from www.flameball.com. Very happy with the results!

Yes, the original metal caps stretch out when removed and don't seem to attach firmly to a replacement shifter cover. I am not sure what the technical name for them is. Next time I have the shifter cover removed I'm going to either try new ones purchased from the dealer or use a little superglue and try squishing them together a little with a set of pliers.
Don't forget to line up the shift gear indicator, if it's an auto, otherwise, you get another chance practicing removing the console!!!!!
I think there is also a little yellow light bulb that goes into the shift indicator lens that needs to be removed and put back in, for automatics that is.
