The heat in my 1984 will work sometimes, sometimes it will not. Does the low coolant sensor have some sort of connection, if so where does it come from? I can't find any type of connection, thought this might be the problem.
Yeah, get an fsm. could be air in the system or some blockage (especially in an older car that someone may have used a radiator sealent to keep the heater core from leaking!). I would also try a power flush.
I have an 84 and my heater was not working correctly. It turned out I had a bad vaccum leak in the Heater/AC Control Unit. I got a NOS and it replaced.

Basically, the same quirk / problem with my '89. I've got the auto climate control set on "90"...and barely any heat. Every so often, the "Low Coolant" will intermittantly come up on the screen, and the air coming out of the dash vents will go pretty cool. Then, the "Low Coolant" notice disappears from the screen, and air from the dash vents begins to warm a little. Any of this 'related'?
Could it be the programmer board (near gas pedal, I understand), or, more likely something in the heater core...?
