I dont want to sell!
It looks like it is getting time to sell my Arctic White 89. As much as I hate to, my dad is right, I will be needing a more practical car that gets better gas mileage and can be driven in the snow for when I move to North Dakota in a year for school. With gas prices hitting as high as they are in CA, i am starting to feel it in the pocket book. When would be a good time to sell?

You don't have to deal with cold weather months in the Bay area, but spring is still best after folks get Christmas bills paid off and income tax checks back.

you have to realize that even tho it's cold in ND, they don't get buckets of snow all year round.
If the car runs and drives well, I donno why you would need to sell.

I have to agree. Unless you're going to buy an AWD Subaru or something, then how are you going to get more practical?
More seats?
Seriously, my 87 gets better mileage than my 4WD truck and almost as good as the wifes Volvo
Just limited on seating...which might be a good thing

Keep the Vette and shop for an early 90's Cadillac Coupe or Sedan DeVille. They are front wheel drive and built solid and usually lower mileage as they tend to be owned by older individuals that tend to stay closer to home. Four years ago I bought a '92 Sedan Deville with 51,000 miles on it for $4,500 and it was like brand new. I have put 75,000 miles on it and it has only needed a starter replaced. It also gets between 20 - 25 MPG dpending on driving conditions.

We are just a few miles from the N.D. border and it does get mighty cold up here. This is the longest I have ever been able to drive my 87 coupe in the 3 years I've had it. I usually have it covered and in the garage by now. We, in most years, have snow cover by this time of year. I have 3 other vehicles that we use during the winter months. I consider them "disposable". The wife has an 06 Impala and I drive either our Chevy tracker or our Buick Century that I just bought. It might not be possible for you, but I would keep the Vette and get a junker to slosh through the snow with.

I agree. ND is known for the cold, not the snow. And how many new cars out there get better than 20-30mpg? Selling your C4 for a 'more practical car' only makes sense if you're starting a family.

Gasoline prices are going to go up forever. Get use to it.

Subarus get lousy mileage, the C4 is a lot better than a Subaru for mileage. If you need a car that gets better mileage get a diesel vw new bettle. 50 mpg and it will run in the snow.
Diesel is the future. It can be made from just about anything. Including alge and coal.
Gasoline is over.
In the near future any car that doesn't get at least 35mpg will be worthless. Something to think about.

I think the original question was when to sell, not "Will you all please talk me out of selling the car my father and I have decided needs to go bye bye?"
For someone going off to school, $4500 for another car is a lot of $$ that could be much better spent.
Spring is the best time to sell. C4s are cheap and plentiful and will stay that way for years to come. Buy a nicer one when you graduate.
Listen to your Dad. Good luck at school.

Thats a small price to pay for the huge increase in fuel mileage. Here are a few examples...
VW Jetta Gas 21/29 mpg
VW Jetta Diesel 38/45 mpg
Focus 2.0 24/35 mpg
Focus 1.8 Diesel 44/50 mpg
Chevy Silverado (6.0) 13/19 mpg
Silverado Diesel (6.6) 15/22 mpg <--not to mention a LOT more power

Ironic, that we are talking about Diesels, the antithesis of a corvette. Usually more than two doors, small powerband, and bad handling. Not trashing them, just an observation.
