I'm not hearing any sound from the two dash speakers on my 88 L98 Coupe. Someone had installed a Pionner deck before I bought the car so I honestly don't know if speakers are there, blown or just not connected. Also the cloth grill is faded to grey and looks bad (should be black).
How do I remove the speaker grilles w/o destroying them. I'm guessing that they are clipped in place but the plastic has got to be real brittle by now.
I have 1989, and there isn't or was there speakers installed. That pad you see is removal, and if you check Corvette catalog's you see them advertised. It's a easy replacement.
the speaker grilles are screwed into the dash from underneath.ya gotta pull the dash pad to get at them.
Pulling the dash pad is not a bad job but if it's brittle you take the chance of it cracking or the plastic parts you have to take off to get it out, go slow you'll need to take off a-pillar mouldings, I think there's 2 screws in defroster vent and 3 screws under dash in front of speedo and radio, I took off bezels in this area so I could see better not sure if you have to or not, when your sure you've got all screws out you'll have to pull straight towards you on dash pad, make sure tilt wheel is lowered, there's 4 clips the dash pad slides into make sure you get the dash secured in all of them when you re-assemble. Hope I helped. Good luck
I've got some infinity speakers installed in there. Cant remember the size but they were smaller than the usual 6x9 speakers. They seem to work well since I have an aftermarket cd player. The only speakers I don't have are the door speakers since its still factory and dont work with an aftermarket unit.
I don't think there are speakers there, just the grilles. I have had speakers installed in mine though, with the aftermarket stereo. Best move I made!!!!!!
If your vette came with a bose system than they didn't put speakers in the dash, if it didn't have bose (not many) then they put 4x6 speakers in the dash, either way that size will bolt right in and clear everything the mounts are already in place. Happy T-Day
Thanks. Since the weather is GREAT here is South Jersey this morning I decided to take a look at what what behind each of the Bose speaker covers (in the doors and the in the rear). There are Pioneer 3-way speakers in all four spots. Look like 6x9's in the rear and 4 or 5 incch in the front. They appear really new. I don't know what model they are but the rear ones are really strong and sound great. The front do not have as much bottom end.
Interesting though, the rear L/R are switched and with both the rear and front. Also, when I change the Balance on the stereo to full right side, it is noticibly louder than I set it to full left. Someone screwed up when installing either the speakers or the radio. I have an after market Pioneer unit (sold by Eclkers and others).
Looks like I'll be doing more that installing dash tweaters ... got some wiring to check also.
I also believe that installing speakers in the empty dash locations should really help with the sound quality in the car. The door speakers are so low and so far forward that the sound, especially the highs, is not good. I may just move the door speakers in to the dash and leave the door with none (I'll use some removable foam to fill the holes).
After removing what was left of the Bose, I installed some Infinity speakers in the dash. They are the nice mid 3 or 4" with tweaters mounted on a 4x6 plate. I had to cut the opening in the grilles and recover with black cloth. The biggest problem was that the magnets on nice speakers are huge. I had to notch a few things behind the dash to make it work. They do sound really nice.
