I have an '86 C4 I live in Arizona where it NEVER rains...Untill today. I have this little problem where as the wipers are working they actually jam up on themselves and get stuck in the middle of the windshield. Quite nice, really. About every light I have to get out and "unjam" them. WTF?
If you're talking about the wipers colliding with each other, that is a common problem on early cars. I've seen posts that people cured it one of 3 ways:
1: switch to later year wiper arms
2: switch to a shorter blade on one side,
3: play around adjusting them

I had that problem when I installed a new windshield wiper motor. I solved that problem by making small adjustments on one wiper arm where it connects to the motor. It took all of 15 minutes to complete the adjustment.
Couple easy ways to adjust. If you look on that plastic screen in the cowl, you'll see piece that's about 1" X 2" that's removable with your fingers. Under that you'll see a nut that will require a 10mm nut driver to loosen. By loosening that nut, odds are you will be able to move the wipers far enough away from each other so they won't crash.
The other alternative is to remove one or both arms and reinstall them in a slightly different position. If you can determine where the full up position is, there are reference marks on the windshield where the wipers were originally intended to be at that point.
I had a wiper crack at the botton where it fits over the stud on the wiper motor. It did the same thing. It would work for a while until it would jump a tooth. A new one was $100 and was made in Mexico. I felt violated.
