Default Rolling a convertible.

The 'Another c4 out of commision' thread got me to thinking.

What would happen if I (God forbid) rolled my CE Roadster? In the other thread the A pillar was flat. I know the roadster's A pillar is reinforced, but still...

Has anyone rolled a roadster, or seen one, and what kind of shape was it in?

I'm thinking my next Vette (a C6 someday...) might be a Targa.

I haven't any pictures of C4 verts rolled. But there have been a few pictures of rolled C6 verts show up over in the C6 section. You might be surprised to learn they held up very well.

Of course, anytime you roll a car (of any kind) strange things sometimes happen.

Always been kinda concerned about this myself. Have never felt like I was really pushing the car to its limits, but should a situation arise where I had to react quickly and sharply....

The people who rolled their C4 Verts didn't make it back to post.

I would avoid a roll... think of it that way. I don't think the A-pillar is going to hold up, regardless.

What about a hardtop? I know I can feel a huge difference with it on but is it strong enough to provide any protection? It seems like a similar construction to a coupe roof.

The chances of rolling a Corvette are slim unless you're an idiot.
Roll overs are much higher in the toyota tacoma.

The majority of rollover crashes I've been involved with that involved a vette or similar performance vehicle, were the result of off camber surfaces and overcorrection on behalf of the driver.

Most hard turns will simply result in the eventual loss of traction and a spin or slide.

Unless there's a built in rollbar somehow tied into the frame or at least the body, it's doubtful it'll do much more than keep all the parts confined to a smaller area. Makes it much easier for the coroner to identify the body.

The HALO on the coupe actually has a factory installed "roll bar" if you will. It has proven itself in action on many occasions. You can probably do a search here or by Google or ?? and see the result of rollover crashes involving coupes. In many of the cases, the occupant/driver walks away relatively unharmed

Best idea? Don't roll it and you'll never need to know

The A-pillar in convertibles are made to support 1.5 times the car's weight. The force of a high speed flip would definitely exceed this.

There is some kind of roll bar that gets bolted down with 10 bolts (5 on each side) to where a b-pillar would be if it were a coupe. The front part of it looks exactly like a targa roof and uses the same 2 bolts to the top of the windshield. The drag strips give it the ok to run at the same times as coupes. I'm curious if it really strong enough to support the weight of a car though.

The GM hard top for verts has a "mini" roll bar in it. The brackets attach it to the frame. Sure it's not a roll cage, but it will offer some protection in a roll over. Same as a coupe.

A Corvette is pretty darn hard to roll. Unless you autocross, or drive like a madman, I wouldn't worry too much about this.

Default Gotten both on the hook

I was in the dealer rotation list for wrecker calls for 10 years and have got both coupes and convertables on the hook after roll-overs. The A pillar on a convertable will not hold the cars weight. Driver was in two parts. The coupe's A pillar will collapse also but the halo still retained good shape and sustained the weight and the collision saving the passenger. I still own a vert but it's in the back of my mind. Much of the reason I gave up on motorcycling. I went to far to many funerals.
