Default Rear bumper removal is impossible. ?

Ok we know its possible.

I did a search and found tons of how to's.

But I dont know what the deal is on my 85.

I can not even rear the brake lights though the gas fill hole or rear license plate hole. I cant get my arm any where near the light or even touch it with a finger. My arms are not that big either......

Any help would be great.

You will have to damn near get most of your arm in the gas lid hole. I removed the rear bumper off my 86 when doing the upgrade bumper swap and did seem to have a problem. Have you tried to take the license plate off and go from there?

Take the inner fender wells off, you can get in through there. Remove the backup lamps and you can get in through there, although you may need to remove the spare tire carrier rear bracket to get your hand in there. It is also easier to remove the exhaust from the cat back. There is another thread about the bumper itself in the past couple of days. There is no way to do this without losing skin (outside of having someone else do it.)

When I had my 88 I had the lights replaced when they replaced the mufflers. Its a tight squeeze but that is one way to do it.

remove the taillights and you will be able to access the nuts that hold the cover on. Might break the studs (I did), had to purchase new brackets with studs from GM.

Hey Dan,

Why are you yanking the bumper? You may have mentioned it on a prior thread, but being the observant one that I am, I missed it.....*s

Well im getting there, But it is tight.

Im scared for when my car is painted and I try to put every thing back together with out scratching any thing....

Its got to be hard to get the lights back in, and the bumper tightened while aligning it.

Any wisdom ??

Watch the "last C4" video

I like how the factory puts the bumper cover on 1st, then the bumper

Proper removal when it's on the car is in the FSM btw.

it is possible....just go to your local park...then catch and train a squirrel...

i believe all the nuts are 10mm...and like everyone has said, take out the taillights...take off the license plate...take off the fender wells...

as far as reassembly...the bumper will kinda hang nicely in place while you hand tighten some nuts...

and if you are prepping for paint....trust me....get a bunch of lil baggies and LABEL them...be specific....you'll thank me later if you haven't already done this

On top of the gas tank, and probably rotted anyways. I've been about 50/50 getting them off the tank. The best one is the front frame rail.

I thought I had a picture but couldn't find it.

It's on the slope of the gas tank. It resides next to the tub.
