I know it's probably easier to change the battery by removing the side panel on my '95, but can someone give me a little more detail on whats involved in doing so....also any recommendations on a battery...I personally like Interstate but am also partial to the Optima.
There's a bolt at the bottom-right corner of the panel. It's a pain to unscrew, you'll need a thin wrench to get to it. The bolts are 13 mm if my memory is correct.

Thanks for any input

Ron, have a '91 but you don't need to remove the panel. Haven't done this for a while so instructions may not be exact, but this I know for sure the bottom bolt can be reached between the panel and rocker panel. DO NOT remove this bolt just loosen it as the panel is slotted and will swing out. Based on the ability for panel to swing out don't believe you need to remove all top bolts. Maybe loosen and leave one in so you can swing out the panel. Just be careful after replacing when opening/closing the door to ensure the panel is positioned properly. Hope this helps and before you start search this forum for this procedure as there is more infomration out there, for sure.
don't remove the bottom one...just loosen it. I'm not an optima fan.....give me a Sears Diehard anyday. And I recently read an article that stated there were only 3 actuall battery manufactures in the US..and they just build to specs. the company requests..number of plates etc.
Like Mojo said, you may have to modify your battery tray. Some others here (including myself) have just filed down or cut off the positive terminal from the top of the battery. Probably better to modify the tray, but both methods will work.

I took one of my old 13mm and put it on the grinder and ground it as flat as possible. works great and don't have worry about scratching rocker panel. change battery 10 minutes
Others have mentioned the need to watch the adjustment of the side panel, relative to the door, when you reassemble everything, in order to prevent contact between the door and panel.
What hasn't been mentioned is that you also need to watch the adjustment of the side panel relative to the hood, or the hood may collide with the panel when you close the hood. If they collide, the side panel will break near the tab for the upper rear bolt. My '94 was broken in exactly this place when I bought the car, and it was some time before it occurred to me what had caused this damage.
Best bet: Mark the existing locations of the mounting screws (masking tape will work fine) before you loosen anything, and put everything back in the same place when you reassemble.

I cut off my top post to avoid hitting the bracket for the PCM.
