Default Good Deal?

So I went and checked out an 84 the other day with a friend. The guy was asking $2000 at the time. It has 146,000 miles, but it started up, sounded good. It has a new flow master exhaust system and it looks like the interior was recently redone, with new seats and carpet. However, the guy just bought it from someone else who had an accident. The drivers side rear quarter is cracked about 8 inches long starting at the wheel well and the two wheels on that side are fecked, so the rear right now is a donut spare and the front is what was on it, but there's a pretty big ding in the rim. He had HREs on it, so those are still good on the passenger side, 255 in the front 285 in the rear. There are a few other things no so great, like missing headlight motors, no hood support, the passenger door handle is busteted, etc.

Now at the same time he's also trying to move some gun metal gray Z06 repros for an 88-96.... he was asking $900 (they have tires on them) but has dropped down to $500 over the last week or so. It seems like he's pretty desperate for cash and hasn't had any interest yet.

What do you guys think? I'm less inclined to get the car, although being a multiple vette owner is inticing. What would you do about the wheels, let him keep dropping the price and test must luck or would you jump?

that is a GOOD price for the gun metal Z06 wheels with tires. If he is advertising them in the right places i would imagine that they wont last long.

The only thing is that it is X-mas time and people are spending less money on stuff like this. I would take 400 CASH and put it in front of him and see if he takes it. If they are in decent shape you will have got a GREAT deal!

Keep us posted!

Oh did you get any pics of the 84?

I didn't have a camera with me, we just ran over to his place after work. He had a small pic on his ad

it isn't discolored, it's got darkish yellow flames on it, but the paint is pretty rough, lots of rock chips and little dings

would I need 2 different pairs of adapters to be able to put them on my 87? The front's are 17" and the rears are 18"

That guy has been trying to sell that C4 for a while now on Craigslist. This is a bad time to try and sell a car, and 2k is definitely a fair price for it. I remember a while back he had it listed as an 87, then I saw the same pic and description and it was re-listed as an 84. He never mentioned that it had the original crossfire motor. Did you happen to take it for a spin?

$2000 is a good deal for a running '84. That being said to get this car in shape will cost some money. I'd take the wheels too.

$1500-2000 in body work from what you've described (a good shop)
$250 for wheel adapters
$??? Paint, depends on who does it.

no, we just let it run and idle for quite a while, no smoke or anything. It probably wouldn't feel all that right with a donut spare on it either. I know the guy trying to sell it just moved up here with the car, was it listed down in the bay area before?

It was listed in Oakland. It had a sticker on the rear window that said "Oakland California". Where is it at now?

That would really make me nervous. What did he find out in the short time he owned it. Maybe nothing, but...

I'd keep looking for say an '86L-89 coupe in nice shape for under $7k.
