I've got long tubes with straight pipes on my '85, shouldnt sound different from an '84. I've gone for a drive for a few hours and it didnt bother me at all. It is noticeably much louder inside the car though . On the outside its much louder as well and sounds extremely aggressive, not for the faint of heart.
I had a gutted cat an no mufflers on my 84. It sounded like a truck. I did not like the sound, it had no tone. It sounded much better with the stock cat and muffler eliminators.

It was loud. Now to me loud is good but if you just want to cruise you might want to tone it down.
I have an '84 with "muffler eliminators" cat only, pipe to the tips. took it on lots of 7-800 mile road trips visiting family and friends. I thought it was fine to drive, drove one 16 hr trip with no top, ears got sunburned, but no problem with exhuast drone.
Just do it. You won't regret it. My 84 has headers, muffler eliminators, and in 4 days will have a test pipe in place of the cat. It sounds real good. Its best sound is in the 1800-2200rpm range going through the gears. Sound clip will not do it justice.
The exhaust eliminators was the first mod I did. If yours still has the original mufflers, they have out-stayed their welcome. When I tookmine off, they must have weighed about 15lbs a piece, totally water logged and rusted. Your 84 will thank you. In my opinion, dont get the chambered, stick with the straight pipe. I can't wait hear mine after the test pipe and new cam. Good luck.
