I got a new shift **** for x-mas for my '89 6-speed. The leather was almost gone on my original.
I've got the **** center out in one piece, but I need to know the trick to removing the metal piece that appears to be locking in the ****? It appears that the thing was pounded in, as it has some small marks on top?
Any help here would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Actually, they are pounded in.
It's a "T" shaped wedge, and it can be a little difficult to get out.
Easiest way is to grab it with a small pair of vice grips. Once you get clamped down on it, slide a long screwdriver through an opening so. Now you can use a small hammer and tap up on the screwdriver. The idea is to have something you can tap in an upward motion on.
It's the tapping motion that will allow that wedge to break free. You can pull on it all you want, and it's next to impossible to budge.
Got the old one off exactly as you described, and the new one is ON.
I thank you, my vette thanks you, and my girl friend will be happy to see the new **** on the car. She is the one that gave it to me for x-mas. Got to love a woman who buys me vette parts for x-mas.
