Headroom - Soild vs Targa
I currently have only the targa top for my LT4 (been this way for 3+ yrs) and have an opportunity to p/u a solid top. How much headroom will I lose w/ the solid top? I'm 6'3 and need a little more headroom than most. Right now I have the sunshade w/ holes plus the full pop in sunshade w/ headliner on my targa...anything to defeat the AZ heat from comin' in. Should the solid top leave even less room than this setup? Is/are there any real benefit/s by going to the solid top?
TIA,
Jeff

Jeff

i can't imagine that you will see that much of a difference...especially considering that you have added in parts to your clear top...the solid tops seem pretty thin..like the clear ones...good luck with that heat in AZ

I am only 5'10" so i dont share your same problem, however i think it may also depend on the seating you have in your vette as well (standard or Sport seating)+ you can adjust the hight/tilt a little to accomidate for taller drivers too

I'm 6'3" and the top is close. Is the frame on the glass tops thinner? I don't come close to the top of the panel, but my head is really close to the targa frame. I'm still curious if I'm going to be able to fit with a helmet on...

You have to try it. Each of us is built a lil' differently. I'm longer in the torso then legs. 34" inseam. I wouldn't fit comfortably with a helmet unless I jammed my knees against the lower panel. Good luck.

6'3" also, the hard top leaves room, not as much as the glass though.
Ive read that guys that replace the foam in their cars run into this more. An upholstery shop can shave the foam in your bottom cushion to give you more headroom.

Another helpful hint..thx. I assume by doing this that the cushion will still have support from the bottom/sides whatever?...hence it doesn't just sink through.

Even with a glass top I have to remove the straps to wear a helmet (I'm just a little over 6'), and have never had a problem with the seat cushion sinking through.

Hi Jeff,
I'm in Chandler, so I share your dilemma with the heat. I'm 6'2" and had to go with the clear top. Not enough room with my painted top. I have removed one of the straps. I agree with the others here that you should try it first, torso height is what counts. I prefer the clear top myself. More open feel and you can watch the traffic lights without stretching your neck. If you would like to check out a painted top, I think my 94 top might fit your car.

I appreciate the offer but, by the time I'd get to try yours, mine will already be here (it's on the way UPS)...I'll post my results. Hopefully it'll work out for me. Thx again though.

I'm 6' 3" and my solid top cause me to slide down in the seat more than I liked. The solid was livable but the glass top was more comfortable for head room for me. The solid was much more quiet and comfortable in cold weather but honestly I really prefered to top off for my drives.

I am a large person 6'.2" and a bit over 300#'s
My car is an 86 with a glass top and normal seats.
My wife's in an 86 with a solid top and sport seats.
I have likes and dislikes about both.
I do like the glass top because I can see the stoplights but I have a solution for that.
My 57 ford came with a prism that was attached to the front glass. It is just for viewing stop lights because of the limited view out of the windshield. this would work great in a Vette also.
I like the "feel" of having something solid over me and when the sun is shining down you do not feel like you are being baked in an oven.
At night I like to be able to look up and see out of the glass though.
I like my normal seats because the sport seats are barely big enough for my rather large posterior to fit in between.
If I had to pick one i would take the solid roof.
