My 1987 did a wierd thing today. Was laying a primer coat down on the hood which went great. But when I ran the car for a little bit later to move it outside after curing, the AC controls AND stereo went dead. Neither does anything at all. It happened when I shut my car off. I realized it because the power antenna only partially retracted. I thought that was wierd so I turned the car back on and that's when I realized the problem.
Being a fairly capable individual, I pulled the fuse cover and looked at all the fuses. I pulled the fuses in questions and did a continuity test on my multimeter. They checked out but all the same, I replaced them. Still no joy. So thinking that sometimes things get funked up, I pulled the battery leads hoping everything would reset. No luck still.
Any ideas? Please shoot them at me. Sure sounds like a fuse but where the heck might it be?
sounds like a fusible link. there are some down by the starter, and some by the rear of the battery
Could also be the battery cable positive end that is the little wire on the battery terminal. it is connected to a relay behind the battery that allows for the maf to engage the burnoff relay after the key is turned off.
Also remember, the key is turned off, and the radio antenna still rolls down. That is run by a fusible link.
No fusable link on an 87 by the starter motor, also, the antenna gets power from the ctsy/clk fuse, not a fusable link. Fusible links are for very high current circuits! Antenna won't go anywhere if the radio cannot be turned on and the radio has its own fuse. Climate control also is powered through the ctsy/clk fuse, so I recommend you check the 15 amp ctsy/clk fuse!
Thanks coupeguy2001 & jfb for all your help. I went back and looked at all the fuses yet again and it turns out that the crtsy/clk fuse was in fact dead. When I checked it earlier it was good but must have gotten an eroneous continuity reading on the multimeter for that fuse. If it was not that, my next bet was that it might a fusable link somewhere. Thanks again for all the great advice! You guys are too awesome.
