It's because our frames are pieces welded together. You can slap all the weld in the world but you won't get the sections to act as one. To eliminate chassis flex you need braces to connect open places of the car. Like a brace between the engine and one behind the seats. There is a post in C4 Tech that shows the solution to this. 84C4 is selling them.
Probably because there is so much chassis flex in C4s, especially C4s that go topless. If you are talking about the kind you get when you take the top off the car and it becomes undriveable, this can be cured with a convertible X brace. I put one on my car and I dont have any more shake with the top off (or on for that matter.) Now all I got is speed bump problems with my lowered Vette, oh well can't have it all!
I ran a post on this type of flex along time ago and found that apparently the majority of 92 on up C4 Corvettes (owners who replied) had this problem. Earlier ones did not.Probably has something to do with trying to bring the weight down (just a guess.) Anyhow, there is only one fix for this and it is some sort of front to rear bracing in the form of an x brace like I used (purchased off the forum, thanks Art! ) or a roll cage. Hatch bars or harness bars cannot cure this type of problem (although they may help other types of flex.)
