Tim Allen had one of the Connally's in a model car on his show. Actually started it and of course ran the car off the table..
I also saw the mmm...57 or 58 FI 283 kit at an antique mall in Missouri a couple years ago, still wrapped in plastic. They wanted about 30 bucks for it. Told the wife get me outta here before I buy it. Could never leave it in the box all wrapped up. :D
the model in the link you provided looks the same except for the tranny branching off... AND MINES POWERED BY BATTERIES NOT BY A CRANK... (thank god for batteries...)
I'm sure mine was battery powered also because it had red grain-of-wheat bulbs for the spark plugs, working distributor, etc. If I remember right the motor and gears were noisy as hell but it sure was cool to see it operate.
This summer, my neighbor was being transferred down to Houston and he was throwing away alot of stuff. I was driving home from work one night and out of the corner of my eye saw a "visible V-8" box sticking out of the top of one of the piles for the garbage men. I had to stop and check.... I found a the motor about 1/2 built in another box, and the rest of the parts in the original box. When he got home I asked him about it and he said he had bought it for either himself or one of his kids many years ago and never finished it. Everything is there.
You can also find them on E-bay. Another visible engine I've seen in catalogs that I'd kind of like to pick up is the original Honda 740-4 (sohc).
Built one in 62. I remember smearing Vasoline over all the bearing and cam surfaces to get it to run smoothly. The only way I could get the spark plugs timing exactly right was to turn the engine till a cylinder was around TDC then find the plug that was lit up.
I remember "rebuilding it" several times. Great memories, thanks.
I found the original at revell-monogram.com. Do a search for "engine" (leave other fields blank) and it takes you straight to it. About 65 bucks; hand cranked version. :jester
