Default Arcing at coil wire post

Hello,

I can see (and hear) arcing from the coil wire post to another spot on the front of the coil. I assume this means my coil is toast but thought I'd check here before replacing it.

So.... *is* it toast, or could it simply be a grounding issue or something like that?

If it could be a grounding issue, quick tips on how to test for and fix that would be much appreciated.

PS: Maybe of interest is the fact that the failure started immediately after a good dose of WOT. When I backed out she was running rough and I could hear the arcing. Visual inspection yielded the above results.

UPDATE: Removed the coil and noticed that the nipple for the coil wire was a little cockeyed. I pushed against it and it broke off! Apparently it had been damaed at some point and that shot of WOT somehow was the last straw. It was arcing from the crack where the nipple broke to the steel, grounded center section.

Your coil IS toast because there is a carbon track which requires less voltage to jump than a plug gap so that is where the spark prefers to jump. Buy a new coil and dry your tears!
