14.5 volts is good charging current. It should drop down a little after you have run for a while without a big load on the electrical system.

It fluctuates all over the place and the battery never seems to take a charge... After driving it for an hour it just barely has enough juice to kick over the engine.

Take that to Circuit City, it will take them less than 10 minutes to make correction.

It's the aftermarket stereo in need of some in-line resistors.
