Default Hood emblem replace

I did a search, and got some good info, but no one addressed the lack of space to get at the nuts on the back of the emblem.

I bought a new emblem for my 87, and got the PAL nuts to hold it down. I know I can use fishing line, or floss, and WD 40 to loosen the old emblem, but what about the nuts hold it on? There is a brace in the way, and 2 very small holes for access.

How in the heck do you get those nuts loose, and get the new ones tight through those little holes?

A 1/4" drive 10mm socket with a short extension is all you need to remove the old PAL nuts.

Those two holes in the hood brace line up with the posts on the emblem; that's why they are there!!

Once you get the new emblem in place, put a small amount of heavy grease on the inside of the socket and place the new PAL nut on the socket. That will be enough to hold the nut in the socket while you cut the new threads.

Have a helper push down on the emblem as it takes some effort to begin cutting the new threads on the emblem posts.

i changed mine on my 86. works easier if a friend holds the emblem while you are screwing and unscrewing. just use a 1/4 inch ratchet with a deep socket to get the nuts off. to reinstall i used some duct seal i bought at home depot,(its what electricians use to seal up holes and around wiring and conduit, its sort of like play doh). put a little bit of the duct seal in your socket, then stick the nuts in the socket. the duct seal will hold the little nuts in place and prevent them from falling out. with someone holding the emblem in place on the hood, take your time and install the two nuts

Thanks. Guy at the body shop recommended threading the pal nuts before putting it on. That way the threads are already cut, and it will be easier to put on.

An extension and a dab of grease or tape to hold nut from falling. Have someone press hood emblem by hand while you install the new nuts. Remove airbox for more room.

The new emblem post have no threads. You need to run the nut down on it outside the car. This automatically cuts threads into it. If you droped your old nuts down inside the hood, your dealer will have more. The dude just game me a pair at no charge.

It was quite the PITA putting one on my '88 a couple years ago by myself.

All of the above are great suggestions.

If you do not have assistance (someone to hold down the new emblem) while you install the nuts from the back side, use some BLUE 3M painters tape to secure the emblem to the hood. Any kind of tape stuck into (I use black electrical tape) the socket, will temporarily hold the nut in the sockt. Beware of dropping the nut

Default hood emblem

hey Dale D. hope all is well with you , I replaced the hood badge on my 84 last Sept. what I used was a little puddy in the socket to hold the nut in place , to get it started I have also used tape in the past only to find months latter that a piece of the tape got trapped under the nut and the badge would become loose the ones I put on in Sept . are just fine , man that is quite a reach to get to those little suckers , do not drop one of them down in the hood I also used the puddy in the scoket when I took the old ones off it held them in place , hope this is of help to you Thanks again for posting the pictures for me , wish you and yours all the best .
