Default LT1 to LT4?

I saw someone in another thread state that it's cheap and easy to convert an LT1 to an LT4. Is this really true? Does the LT4 have the optispark also? Are they the same block and different heads and intake? I know the LT4 has roller rockers and the LT1 doesn't but I'm not sure of the other differences in the engines. Thanks

You're better off just doing an aftermarket heads and cam package for a little more money. You'll see bigger HP gains. Take a look at ARE's (link on right side of screen) LT-1 package, that's what I'm going with.

LT-4... different cam, intake and heads.

This is also something that i considered doing for a few years...until i got right down to comparing the cost of the LT1 to LT4 conversion. The upgrades are as simpleas BubbleHead says...just change the cam, heads and intake and the change is complete...those are the only differences between the two engines. But for the price...you have other options that'd give you greater payback.

I'm not knocking the LT4 in ANY way! Wish i had one!!! Its a GREAT motor...but for the cost of converting... ... well...i dunno.

There are a few other differances besides cam, heads and intake. One is it has a better crankshaft for the higher revs.

Ok...i'll yield on that one. But i'll stand by the conversion price/return summary.

There sure seems to be a common misunderstanding about what the differences are between the LT1 and LT4. There is much more than simply heads, cam, and intake. Take a look at the chart below.

http://members.lightstream.net/~rott...ineoptions.htm

However, the heads, cam, and intake are the major power makers though.

Here is some more info.

Looked at the info you posted and saw nothing to change my mind. There are MUCH more economical ways to safely add 30 hp and 5 ft/lbs of torque.

I was addressing the
just change the cam, heads and intake and the change is complete...those are the only differences between the two engines.
paragraph which simply is not true.

I agree it is not worth converting a LT1 to a LT4 when you are talking about cost.

I chose my words poorly. I should have said "those are the most significant differences between the two engines....

From that article you comparing engines..

Total Engine Weight 261.44 kg (576.4 lbs) 341.83 kg (753.6 lbs )

The LT-4 is 177 lbs heavier???

The LT-1 also recommends premium gas also, not just the LT-4

Ericcer is the one linking to the spec tables....but you do bring up an interesting point. If a basic fact such as the recommended fuel are wrong on his tables...what ELSE on the table(s) are incorrect?? ;)

But i STILL like the LT4!!! And STILL wish i had one. :D

Sorry. . I was aware of that, just didn't feel like quoteing him and the link :)

I second "the wish I had an LT-4" :yesnod:

But after some head work and a new cam, won't matter all that much.

Tain't no thang! Sounds like you've got some "plans" for your LT1! What kind of head work are you going for? and which cam? Also, do you have anything else in mind for "down the road"?

It's going to be a little ways down the road, but I'm stuck between building a stage 1 type 383 or going out and putting stage 3 type top end... looking at either Speed Demon or ARE when the time comes. Figure the above mods, some 3.73 gears, converter and DR's should put me into the 11's.

Both builders are quite a drive for me, but I want someplace that has the knowledge in vettes, where I can drive the car in.. drop it off for 3 or 4 days, then drive it home.

Don't think you'll be disappointed with the results from EITHER place. Sounds like you got a good solid plan in the works for a smoker!!! :yesnod:
