You could replace it by taking the spindle off, leaving the ball joint in. With all that work though, you may as well replace the joint too. Its a lot of knuckle cutting work!
My lower ball joint boot broke, noticed it when greasing. I could NOT find just the boot, I had to buy the ball joint with the boot. So I put in new ball joints with the new boot.
I've got the spindle and arms seperated. The old boots were ripped so I cut the rubber back to the ball joint. There looks like a thin metal retaining ring holding the boot to the joint, but I can't see how to get it out. The joints are otherwise in good shape and don't really need replacing. Poly replacement boots are available from Energy Suspension.
