Total Engine Weight for the LT1 is 261.44 kg (576.4 lbs). Total Engine Weight for the LT4 is 341.83 kg (753.6 lbs). Any thoughts as to where the LT4 picks
up that extra 175 lbs.
I recall reading an article (can't remember where) that suggested the
LT4 motor was originally intended to go in the C5, but was later scrapped
for a totaly new engine. I wonder if weight was a factor?

Jason, those weights didn't seem right to me either, but most of the
info on the site seems pretty accurate. http://members.lightstream.net/~rottie/home.htm

Yeah, no way there is an extra 175lbs .... the biggest difference is the intake, and that's 10-20 lbs max. Things like the roller rockers and larger ports actually REDUCE weight.... those numbers are wrong. Maybe they weighed the LT4 with it attached to the car :p:
Either that or some big dude was standing on the scale when they weighed the LT4. :)
The only remote (*very* remote) possibility I can think of is that they weighed an LT1/4L60E together, and then an LT4/ZF6 together. But I bet the tranny weight difference is maybe in the 50# neighborhood, at most. Not 175!!!
LT4's do not have a forged crank-nodular iron. It is specially prepped with undercut fillets, etc though.
I'm sure the numbers are incorrect or one was with the accessories and one was without.
The engines should be nearly identical. I remember the L98 vs LT1 were slightly different mainly due to LT1's going to a cast iron exhaust manifold when the 91 L98 used a SS exhaust manifold-diff of like 20 pounds.
Easy way to find out I am away from my car right now or I would post weight.Any fellow LT4 er post the weight of the car.Same with a 96 auto. Then we will see. Thanks

Re: LT1 vs LT4 engine weights (LT4Coupe)
I have a copy of GM's 1996 Corvette Specialist's Book, the document used to turn mild-mannered auto salespeople into instant Vette experts! ;)
According to the manual, the weights listed above are correct - page 40 lists the LT1 as 576.4 pounds fully dressed; page 41 lists the LT4 as 743.6 pounds fully dressed. I always thought that was an error...
As far as the cranks, page 42 shows the LT1 as having a "Modular Cast Iron" crank and the LT4 as having a "Forged Steel" crank.
One other interesting tidbit from the book: the rear tread (shown in a diagram as the distance between the centers of the rear tires) on a convertible is 1.5" wider than the coupe. Makes you wonder if the offset for the 9.5" rim is different than the 11" rim? I wouldn't think the suspension and drivetrain parts are unique for the droptop...
Plenty of GM propaganda has typos or is wrong. They print that stuff months before the specs are finalized. If someone really thinks the LT4 weighs 175lbs more than an LT1, please tell what is adding that extra weight. It's not the crank :) Also note the incorrect weight cited for the LT4 just happens to be the weight of the LT5. Hmmm...I wonder... ;)
I've had LT-4 and LT-1 engines (no accessories, with manifolds, no flywheel) air freighted in from the mainland and there was a weight difference of around 25 pounds. I think most of that was in the crating.
The cranks are not forged. I've pulled them out of the engine, and have them on the floor of my shop.
