Removing that panel from the glass is nearly impossible - it's a Serious adhesive that's used to hold it together. Forget the spanner nuts - taking them off won't do anything. Mask it off and paint it in place...
Thanks ron, I guess thats what I needed to here, Ill have to bolt it back on. The weather stripping will be off though for paint, hopefully no issues come from that.
Last time I painted mine I did it with the hatch off the car (also the doors, rocker covers and front "fenders"). Lots easier to do a good job around the halo bar and hatch opening without the actual hatch in the way. I was also changing the color of the halo from red to black, so I really needed good access into the hinge recess area.
Doors off because I thought it would help for doing the sills/jambs - don't think I'd do That again. More work than it's probably worth. Rocker covers and fenders helps not having to stand on your head to get that close to the ground with the paint gun. Definately the way to go - easy and much better than painting them on the car.
I left the hood and Both bumper covers on there. The front bumper and hood weren't getting painted anyhow (had been done as accident repair just a couple of years earlier) and the Rear cover turned out to a real hassle to remove - all of the bolts attaching it to the body are rusted to junk and will have to be cut out - I wasn't willing to do that just for a paint job. No big deal - it's easy to mask off cleanly anyhow. I Did have to take the time to remove All of the rear lights (brake/turn, side marker, etc.).
Hmmm - also removed the gas door (painted off the car). Took out the rear fender liners. The door sill covers. etc. Took the rear spoiler off too (see pics). Thought I was going to be able to "lose" that damn spoiler (came with the car - I don't really like it..) during the paint project, but it's bolted through the bumper cover - too many big holes in That now to patch up. When/if I ever have to replace the cover I'll throw away the spoiler, meanwhile it's back on there...
Lot of time/labor to "do it right" - I'd hate to have to Pay someone else for the job!
The glass is bonded with the same SMC adhesive that holds the rear bodywork together. Tough stuff. Do not seperate them. If you do, it will be hard to get the glass back in the same place.
