Default Hunt for a Vette

This question is for all you corvette lovers out there. I am looking to buy preferably a 91 or 92 vette. The strange part is that I've driven several 90's vettes and several 85 an 86 vettes. The earlier vettes have much better pick up than do the later ones. Have any of you had the same experience ? and would the automatic transmission (if it needed a rebuild) be the culprit ?

Any help would be appreciated.

I had an 84' and currently have an 87'. I have driven three 84's, one 85' one 86' my 87' a 93' and a 96'. I would have to say that of all these cars probably the one that was the most fun to drive was the 93' second most fun would be the 96'. I hate to say it because I have an L-98 but the LT-1 in my opinion is much more fun to drive. The newer cars seem to be alot smoother both in ride and acceleration. The older cars are a little more hesitant when you put your foot to the floor. Put it this way if I could afford to I would trade my L-98 for an LT-1 in a heartbeat.

One good point for the L-98 though is that from what I hear it is a little easier to work on and there are more mods available for it.

The L98 is the reason why they feel like they have more pickup, its geared for low-end torque and stoplight driving. These actually lose their HP after second gear and this is why we all modify the engine intake to get it back (the L98 intake is made for a 305 engine). LT-1's (92-96? or was it 91?) have their own issues like the optispark instead of a distributor and it goes bad as soon as water gets anywhere near it. Most people will recommend to get the newest vette you can afford.

The tranny would not be a culprit, they all have basically the same one 4L60E is almost the same as a 700R4 and these are about the best auto trannys ive ever driven.

My first Vette was an 86, It was very fast off the line. Then I traded it for a 1993 and it did not seem as quick off the line. But overall I like the 93' much better. It is faster at the top end and rides much better then the 86 did. Also I was always fish tailing the 86 and with the traction control on the 93 I feel alot better when the roads are wet.

yeah traction control is the best benefit of the later vettes. i wish mine had it, or i would never have wrecked (hydroplaned).

My Vette is a 91 and my mom has an 87. Both are L98's, autos, & have the same rear gears. For some darned reason, my mom's 87 feels stronger than my 91. Go figure.

I drove a 91 auto and it was pretty fun, and comfortable seats lol, but I would still prefer my 95 any day. I've never driven an L98 on the highway but I hear it pretty much dies at higher RPMs. The LT1 you can punch it at 70 or 80 and it still feels strong :yesnod:

I love my 96 CE; suppose they had worked out most of the problems with the earlier models.
