Same thing as a muffler. Changes the sound of the exhaust. On cars with them, replace as needed or do without. I may be wrong, but I don't think you have a resonator other than the two mufflers. Been a while since I crawled under mine (87), but it seems like it just had two pre-cats in the front y-pipe, a section of straight pipe to a single catalytic converter, rear y pipe to two mufflers. Don't remember any more parts than that.
