I searched the archived posts about removing a shift ****. I have a 96 auto. I need to take my **** off, I removed the button on the top. Down inside there appears to be a square bracket or something, I can't pull or twist the **** off. The archived posts refer to using a pair of snap ring pliers to remove a c clamp. I did not see a clamp in there, does the snap ring plier technique apply to all C4s or just the earlier ones? How do I get mine off, do I need to take off the roof panel and stand on the seats, pull on the **** and hope for the best?
once the button is off you should be able to see the snap ring. It's a small c shaped piece of metal with a tiny hole on each end of the C. You can't pull the **** off with the clip still in.

There is a special tool that's used for it.
I did it without the tool, getting it back in is tuff. Watch, it gets lost real easy.
For $11 at Sears I got the adjustable kind with the tiny tips. You place the tips at the ends and tighten them in with a philips head screwdriver. There are about 4 choices of tips to choose from. Of course when I visit the Craftsman tool section of Sears I rarely leave with only what I came for, I also got an adjustable mag lite and a new screwdriver set.
I broke the tip of the snap ring pliers trying to remove the ring. With a lot of effort I was able to finagle it off with a pair of small flat head screwdrivers. After that the **** just lifted right off. Getting the snap ring back on was next to impossible so I left it off, the **** stays on pretty well without it. One thing that annoys me is ever since I installed the aftermarket shift plate I found that both the old and the new leather shifter covers fit so tight I am unable to pull the lever all the way back to first gear. I know the leather cover is not put on backwards because it only goes on one way. Is there a solution to this problem?
