I know there's an audio forum, but I thought this would be easier to address quickly here, and my buddy and I are audio idiots.
His car went through a mini flood and the radio is shorting and draining the battery. It's been disconnected, but he wants a radio.
Ideally he'd like to put a new head unit in the car and be done. His car is a '94 with the bose system. I think there's a harness to do this with the exisiting speakers, but from what I read responses are very mixed on whether this works or not. What is his best move? Replace the whole system?

Depends on how much $$$ your willing to spend, and what you want. If the speakers got wet, they could be toast also. Why? Because the speakers and amps are one unit, unlike any other car stereo you will see. If it were mine, I would just rip it all out. You can sell the old system to a place that repairs the Bose systems, to make some money back.
Your first move should be to the Audio section and read the C4 FAQ sticky at the top of the section, and then ask your questions there.
I would test it with a new head unit before you completely install it in the dash. If it sounds ok and there is no electrical drain then you can leave the rest but it is probably a good time to upgrade the speakers too.
