Since air is obviously heavier than brake fluid it will come out of that opened valve first........right? I'm calling on that ol' wives tale! Or could it be that after doing four wheels with four beers you just don't care? And yes I did try it (with my father) about 18 years ago. Will have to admit that when the beer was gone.........neither of us really cared that the brakes were rather mushy as we went out to do some lakeside fishing (hey, at least we weren't stupid enough to take the boat with us). It was a very enjoyable afternoon for the both of us. Two days later that car was at a shop having the lines bled in a proper manner.
First I am glad you and your Dad had a fun afternoon. Second, air is hardly heavier than brake fluid. Third, gravity bleed does work.
Very informative discussion. After reading the info on speed bleeders I got on their web site and ordered a set. Also ordered the bag as it will be easier than trying to keep a can balance somewhere.

I did not know that Brake fluid could FLOAT?
Bleeders are mounted facing UP, so the HEAVY air can float out. The brake fluid will try to seak it's own level, with the master cylinder mounted above the calipers fluid will drip out forcing the air out.
I have some I have not installed yet. Do you need sealent, does it come already applied to the SB's?
The ones I have from post #13 come with sealent on them. Since I use mine tons with tracking the car I took their recomendation and got extra sealent in a tube.
