'86E. So I'm driving down I-5 today and decide I'll take advantage of the Speedometer Check. As I glance to see where the Odometer it is, it stops, as I am looking at it. That's just weird. About 12 miles later, it works again for a few miles, then quits. Started again a few miles later and then stops. Is the Odometer Electronic or Mechanical? Electronic Trip Meter and Speedometer working normally.
But the car is turned on and traveling at 65mph - yet the Odometer is functioning intermittently.
I'm guessing you have odometer problems. I mentioned mine didn't work with the car in the "off" position to verify that it was electric and not solely mechanical. If it was 100% mechanical, it would turn whether the ignition was on or not. If your speed / trip odometer is still reading without dropping to "0" intermittently, then it's definately an odometer issue or problem with the connector to the circuit board.
The early C4's have a VSS (vehicle speed sensor) connected to the tranny output shaft and data is sent thru the ECM to the dash circuit board to an electronic motor that drives the odometer. It sounds like something is wrong in the motor.

So if there is a problem with the Odometer itself, would this affect the calculation for MPG? Honestly, this Odometer may have been malfunctioning for a few hundred miles and I have just not noticed. I have noticed that my Instant and Average MPG's seem to have dropped. Thinking I was out of tune, I changed the Spark Plugs and Air Filter just a few days ago (still have a few scabs on my right hand to prove that). If the Odometer stops intermittently, would this cause the MPG calculation to be incorrect?
