I have had my sirius radio plugged into the cigarette lighter in my '93 for a little over a year now, and have never had a problem. But a week or so ago, it wouldn't power up, so I tried the cigarette lighter itself, and it wouldn't get hot either. So I checked the fuse, and it was blown (as was the fuse in the power adapter for the sirius receiver) So, I ran down to Advance, got some extra fuses, but as soon as I turn the car on, it blows the fuse every time.

Whats the deal? What next?
Thanks.

You have a short circuit. I assume that this occurs with nothing plugged in to the lighter. You will need an FSM to find which devices are on the same circuit. If the short is there all the time, you may want to try the buzzer method mentioned here recently. It's a crappy job. A lot of time on your head wiggling wires.

well it doesn't blow the fuse if nothing is plugged in. I was sitting in the passenger seat with everything unplugged, leaning over looking at the fuse. I started the car, and the fuse was still good.....then as soon as I plugged the charger in, it blew the fuse.

Don't do that anymore. When you plug in the accessory, the current limitoif the circuit is being exceeded. I would wire up a Heavy Duty Aux Power Plug.

Hey Doc! It hurts when I do this!
haha,
I guess sometimes you have to keep doing doing it even though it hurts...just to pinpoint what exactly hurts.
But why would the limit of the circuit be overloaded all of a sudden? It has worked fine for over a year....and then overnight it's fried?
I'm sure a heavy duty auxiliary power plug might suffice as a work-around, but I should be able to plug the standard adapter in with no problems....
ah the joys of owning a 15 year old car with 153,000 miles......so many things just refuse to work. I haven't had operating windshield wipers in almost a year and a half! And no cd player for longer than that.
S ounds to me like you need to replace the guts of the lighter.
I think this is exactly my issue. Mine didn't blow the fuse until I installed a new center console which required removing and replacing the old lighter unit.
The lighter fuse is 5 amps. It could be that the Sirius receiver when new drew just under 5 amps, but now that it is older exceeds 5 amps, or it has a serious problem and draws lots more than 5 amps. I would power up the Sirius with an external power supply that has an ammeter and see what the Sirius draws. DO NOT put a larger fuse in the lighter circuit unless you like watching your vette burn to the ground!

on the inside of the fuse cover, it lists the "CIGAR" fuse as a 15 amp fuse. The original burnt fuse I pulled out was blue with a 15 on it....thats what I bought to replace it, and thats what keeps burning up.
Unless my ignorance preceeds me.....am I missing something?
If it is printed 15 amp fuse for the cigarette lighter, then that is what it is. Its 5 amps on my car. I think you have a defective Sirius radio drawing more than 15 amps.
Try your receiver in a different car (some unsuspecting friend), see if it blows the fuse in that car, if it does, you know there is nothing wrong with your corvette
