I need ti replace the pipe between the stock header and the cat on my 85. The stock pipe is a double pipe. Is the reason for heat or performance? Could I build new ones out of regular exhaust pipe, or do I have to new?
I would just get the front Y-pipe as a complete unit and install it. It's not a big deal to do at home. Figure on $175 for a ready-to-install front Y-pipe.
Getting custom built pipe may be a little cheaper but will take a suitable pipe bender to form one up.
Muffler shops typically use 14-16 gauge pipe when they custom bend pieces. Replacement Y-pipes from the major suppliers use pretty much the same size.
OEM stuff is double-walled for both heat protection and rust-thru poortection. But the overall thickness of OEM is not much more than the aftermarket stuff.
Go with a new front "Y" instead of having a muffler shop do it. It will save you some $$ and it is not difficult to do.
I would check out Mid America, they have a front "Y" this is 2-1/2" instead of the standard 2-1/4". This bolts right up and flows better to the cat and out. While you are at it, check the cat to see if it is still good. If it falling apart inside, check out Performance Peddler for their Magnaflow cat (bolts in).
