And you are going to let this guy work on your car?I'll give you a hint.If he doesn't know what it's made from it's going to take him a week to get it out and back in.Find someone who at least knows they are expanded polystyrene.I lie.100% recycled baked bean cans.
yeah i was looking at picutes i kinda figured that. but also do you guys think that it could be necessary to have to change it? he said the gas if sitting long enough may have rusted the inside of the tank. made it sound like a new tank would set me back a lot. he is a guy that was a technician at a chevy dealership for like 15 years before retiring so he should know his stuff. what you guys think?

Pull the filler lid off of it and take a look inside of the tank. If it is rusty, you will be able to see for your self. Here is a write-up along with how to photos.
I would take the tank out myself. There are places you can take the tank to be repaired that will boil, clean, repair, whatever it needs, and then they line the inside with some sort of plastic or resin. It is the same stuff they use in airplane fuel tanks. I did this on My 68 AMX and 69 Javelin few years back, and I going to do it on my 88 Vette next winter as a winter lay-up project. There is nothing wrong with my tank, or sending unit, but doing it as a PM project.
