Default Oh Krap!!!

Well, I REALLy did it this time. This is just about as stupid as stupid gets.

The new job required me to install a home office and in the process of moving mountains of paper, books and manuals, and documents great and small, my reciepts including the titles to my cars wound up in the wrong pile and were discarded. :o

This included the title and bill of sale for my 85 Vette.

I have 3 questions...

1. How in the world can I prove to the DMV that the car is mine and apply for a new title?

2. When I go to sell the car next month (I'm buying a C5), what kind of problems will this generate even if I can get it retitled?

3. How can I kick my own azz hard enough for making such a stupid mistake?

Feel free to let me have it.

1.Your drivers license is all they need and some $ for the new title.
2. see 1.
3.The line that you sit in is going to be enough to make you wish you were dead.

If the car is already titled in your name, DMV will have it on record?
If the title has not been transfered, you will probably need to get in touch with the owner of record and get another Bill of Sale?

You're right! I bought it from a small lot 2 years ago. They might still have a copy of the bill of sale.

I'll have to drive down there on Saturday as I don't remember the name of the place.

I'm going to try and be nice because I know you are frustrated right now............but............
Are you trying to say that you bought this car two years ago and do not have it titled in your name????????

If it is in your name.....read the second post from catlettlt1. All you need is a drivers license to prove who you are (and a little money for the replacement title and fees associated with that).
As long as the car/cars in your name the state will have the records. All you have to do is prove who you are.
I've had to do this a couple of times in my life. It really is quite easy.

Good luck with it

It's in my name but as the saying goes "a bird in the hand...". Going into the DMV and asking for a title for a Vette without any documentaion, they're just going to say "ya, right", and stuff me into a friggin cop car.

All you need to do is take in the VIN from the dash and DMV will already know who's car it is. You are the legally registered owner. I am sure this happens all the time.

I had a car I was donating to charity and could not instantly locate the title, rather than waste ANY time at all I went to MVD and for $5 (in Arizona) had a replacement title.

You may even be able to do this on line. I think you can here.

Yep, lost a couple titles for vehicles over the years. All you need is a drivers license and they will verify that you are who you say you are and the already have it recorded in there system that the car was in your name, 20.00 here and a new title printed. If it was never in your name, legally transfered, then its a PITA to get intouch with old owners and have them have a title re-issued. It can only be reprinted for the owner on file. You should be OK, no bill of sale needed, just your ID.

OK, I hope the state of Moneysota is as easy to work with as you guys think. I don't trust em. They'll charge me $500 or write a citation or something.

Relax, it's not that bad. People who have house fires or flood damage to their homes go though the same issues.

Pick up the phone and call your local DMV and ask them what the procedure is.

with everyone else.
You just apply for a lost title. The state will have on record that you are the owner. Happens all the time.
You don't need to get a duplicate bill of sale. You only needed that to title it the first time (or whenever ownership changes). In your case, you are not changing ownership.

Default title

Do you even need a title? In the great state of Maine you only need a title for cars 15 years old and newer. Maybe same in Minny.

Just to keep you from crying more about it......I took 10 minutes out of my evening to track this krap down for you (quite an easy job using Google, BTW).

So.......here is a copy and paste from one of the pages:
"Only the vehicle owner or a legal representative of the owner may apply for the title.
Your duplicate title will then be issued for $7.25, plus the $8.50 filing fee. Should you find the original title later, return it to a DVS location.
To apply by mail, send the duplicate title form and your payment to:

* Driver and Vehicle Services
* 445 Minnesota St. Suite 168
* St. Paul, MN 55101"

Now here is a copy and paste of the address of the DMV in your area that they say can do the duplicate title :

City: Minneapolis
Address: 2929 CHICAGO AVE SO
Zip: 55407
Phone: 612-348-8240
Hours: MONDAY-FRIDAY 9:00-6:00 SAT 9:00-2:00

I will assume that they can do it on the spot for you because of the wording they use (you can print the form out on the net and send it in, or go to the DVS and fill it out there)............but...........as you can see, the phone number is also listed in the above paste (and even the office hours for your convenience). You can call them Friday between the hours of 9:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m. to confirm the first paste. I can promise you that, at the most, all you will need is your license and a slim chance of needing the v.i.n. Doubt they will need the v.i.n. because the system will already have you on record as owning the vehicle.
Also looks like you will be out of pocket a total of $15.75 (plus fuel to and from).

Funny thing about this is that it took me less time to find this information than it has for me to type this message.

Seriously though........even if I have sounded like somewhat of a smartazz about it, I really do hope this information is helpful to you.

As stated earlier, I have lost a couple of titles before and it's not hard to get it replaced (at least in Texas it's not).
Good luck and let us know how it turns out.

And on edit:
I followed the link to getting a duplicate title done........yeah, you will need a tad bit of info on the car......soooooooo.....here's a link to the page that you can scroll down to "duplicate title", click on that to bring up the .pdf document you can print, fill out and take into the DVS:

Again, hope this some help (and a little comfort).

Alright, one more edit............
After clicking the above link, you will need to click on "Motor Vehicle Forms" then follow the next page down to "duplicate title".....then you should be golden.

Thanks, Thats just what I need to fix this...I think. They still want to know stuff like my title number and junk like that so I'll probably have to clear out half a day and run all over to do it. It's better than going to jail or something though.
