Whats a 85 vette worth and what do i need to pay special attention to when checking it out? The guy is asking $5900 for it and it is tagged white with red int.removable glass top ( don't they all? ) 94k miles new tires and shocks. I have not seen the car yet so i do not know how the body is or how good it looks but, wanted to know what to look for. I have a 77 and 81 now looking to go into C4 style. :jester
Is it an auto or 4+3 stick? If its a stick you might want to take it to a tranny shop and have them look at the OD unit. At 90,000+miles it may be suspect to fail. That seems like a good price too. Personally, I love my 85. :chevy
here is mine its an 85!! also that is cheep here in tampa i saw an 84 for $8500 !! it depends on the area you are at. i think its a good deal, dont worry if its a stick i have 4+3 tranny with over 119000 miles and its perfact. i have to change the tranny oil next week . it is smart to do it every 10,000 miles.lol i think you will love it...

There's an 85 by my house selling for $7995, but he said he would take $7500.
the following quote is from ralph
Most 85s have problems with the clear coat paint, so if it doesn't, it's
been repainted. If the interior is leather and not a wreck, most likely its
been replaced. The weahter stripping sucks on all years.... However a complete weather stirpping
kit is big $$. If it has a clear top, check it out carefully. GM changed
the material twice since then and the 85s are prone to heat stress cracks
(a million tiny cracks you can see from the inside looking out) that will
turn into real cracks...plus the 85 still has the pin and floating screw
mounts in the front, so only tops from 84-mid 86 will fit without changing
the front mounting brackets and moldings. Be thankful if it has a solid
top. Check the door panels, the material will shrink if the car was left
out on the sun a lot. Same goes for the bumpers...they are prone to warp,
particluarly if it is a dark color. The brakes on the 85 simply suck. No
one makes performance pads or rotors for them either, and upgrading to
larger brakes is expensive and requires custom brackets (which is where
they soak you). Make sure you check the steering after the car has sat for
a while. The racks sometimes get "morning sickness" where they will be
stuck until you work them back and forth for a while...this is a problem
with all years i think...but don't forget the 85 is almost 17 years old.
The 85 came with stock suspension or Z51 optional road race suspension. The
Z51 option came with the 3.07 gear, HD cooling system and an oil
cooler...all good things, but it also comes with stiff springs that ride
like a stage coach, great for road racing, not great for drag racing.
Changing the springs is not that expensive tho...so you might be better off
with all the other stuff that comes with the Z51. Also the 84-87 share the
same suspension geometry, that was changed in 88....therefore the wheel
setback and shocks are differnent than the later years (suspension has less
travel, wheels require less set back). Power windows are very slow...still
use a plastic ribbon that is prone to break. Again new window regulators
are not all that expensive if you look around. My tranny guy told me the
case from the 85 700r is one of the best, but i've heard other opinions,
again keep in mind that the car is 17 years old and if the tranny is
original, you might be rebuilding it shortly. Also as an automatic, it will
have a dana 36. I never had trouble with mine, but you know the drill. That
is about all i can think of off the top of my head.
I hope i didn't scare you away from the 85. Fact is, if you are buying it
as a drag racer, it's a good car and most of the things i pointed out are
true of most C4s and you wouldn't have to address many of its faults. The
85s are lighter than the newer cars and tend to be inexpensive since they
are among the oldest C4s ($7500 is not a bad deal, IF it is in very good
condition and needs nothing). The 85 comes stock with forged TRW pistons
and beefier rods than later years
i bought my '85 back in 1996 with a little over 33K miles. overall it was in very good condition with 2 previous owners. the second owner only had the car about one year, and drove it approximately 1500 miles. the paint was mostly original, but did have some touch up done to a couple panels. the paint on the rubber bumpers didn't look all that great. the interior was excellent, and did have all the original leather. weather stripping was very good. i spent the first year doing the cleaning and preventative maintenance - auto transmission service, plugs, wires, AC service (recharge), cooling system clean/flush, fuel filter, throttle body /air intake cleaning, and general cleaning/detailing, etc. the rest of the stuff was brakes and tires. in the past 5 years, i have driven it about 40K miles, with pretty much ZERO problems. lately, i have been experencing steering "morning sickness", the bearing in the smog pump has gone out, the drivers door window regulator needs some attention, and i could use s new hatch weather seal, all will be taken care of in 2002. last summer, i had the bottom repainted, and next summer i'm planning on having the upper surfaces painted (it's two-tone). since it's my every day driver, and if you look at it as an 17 year old used car, i can't complain. i wouldn't hesitate about buying another '85 in the right condition.
Just for reference, I paid $8100 for my '84 here in CT in August. I saw over the summer another '84 for $5500 obo, and it was completely trashed...a total piece of junk. I went to KBB.com and checked out what my Vette averaged for the condition it was in and the price I paid was slightly lower than that..I think KBB said $84-8500.
I paid $4000 for mine the guy was asking $5800. All option z51 with 4+3. Good shape overall with 82k mi. Only thing it needed was the dash fixed and cleaned up. See what you can talk him down to, the guy I bought mine from was firm at 5k till I pulled out 4 grand cash. Let the cash do the talking :yesnod:
