Default 1987 performance modification questions

Have a 87, read on the forum about enhansing performance with K&N air filter & as I recall, a mention of cutting additional air slots in the case for added air flow. Anything to this? Howzit done. I also want to know how to turn off the forever glowing "servic engine soon" idiot light. I service on a reg. basis, but not via a chevy garage..How do I make it go bye bye forever??

K&N filter is no big deal. The oiling of the filter can cause problems.
Cutting the airbox is a mild improvement, but not hard to do. Remove the metal cover, and cut the fins out. Leave enough metal to hold the filter in place.
Best way to extinguish a service engine soon is pull the code, and fix the problem. Once you fix the problem, take the negative lead off of the battery for 5 mins. Poof, it's gone.

If you have an SES, then you have an engine code. Pull the engine code and fix it, and then disconnect the battery to clear it. Don't halfazz it and rig it to stay off.

Cut lid is just that, cut a big square hole with snips/dremel/whatever, exposing the whole filter to the air.

On the ALDL, jumper the top two terminals on the right with a paper clip and turn the key on. The service engine soon light will start blinking. Count the blinks and you have your code. The car will run better after whatever is causing the code is found and fixed. Another way to rid yourself of the SES light is to pull the bulb, but not a good idea.

What they said about the air filter lid, but I'd just use a stock filter.

The SES light being on is an indication that the ECM see something wrong. Sometimes it's as simple as the gas cap not being tightened down after a fill-up (the *(^&@^ OR service station attendants are great at not doing this )

Also, you can drop by any AutoZone parts store and they will retrieve the code for you. When you get that code number, post it here and we can help you with the solution.
