Default C4 Seat Installation

I recently ordered new seats (standard seats/mounted) for my 94 Vette. I know how to remove the base, via clip under the base, but not sure how to approach removing the back portion. Would appreciate any tips for removal of old seats and installing new seats. Thank you!

To remove the entire seat, including frame, there are four bolts, one on each corner, holding it to the floor. Move the seat all the way back, remove the plastic trim pieces and remove the bolts. Move the seat all the way forward and remove the bolts in the rear. Be sure to disconnect all power lines and lift it right out.

You don't have to remove the seat to remove the cushions from the frame, if that's what you're asking.

Yes, That is what I am asking. How difficult is it to remove the seat back without removeing the seat frame from the car? Hoping it is as simple as popping the old seat cushing out and putting the new one's in (already mounted to cushion). I see no problem with the bottoms as they are heald in via clip underneath.

Thanks for your help

That was a pretty good tutorial on replacing covers, but what is the process if you purchase 'mounted on new foam' covers, especially for the seat backs?

Those instructions work only for '94 -96 seats. I guess the easiest explanation is to follow those instructions for removing the covers and you will be able to then see how the foam cushion is held to the frame remove the foam cushiom: reverse the removal after installing new seat cover on foam.
Earlier model seat backs are different. Pull the seat with foam out at in the headrest area until you can feel a 1/4 inch spring rod that extends from top to bottom. These are wedged under 2 clips on frame, one near top and other near bottom. I use this weeding tool to push the rod toward the center of the seat.

Once both top and bottom are free pull toward door and rod will slip from the clips on the opposite side and cushion is free to be removed. Reverse this procedure to get new seats installed

If your 94 seats are anything like my 84, there are 4 clips, 2 top, 2 bottom, that are raised approx. 3/16" of the back and angle to the middle.. I had to pry the cushion in and then up to clear them.. both on one side, and then pull the other side to the middle..

Someone posted these a year or so ago about the seat back and clips. The seat in the pics is obviously out of the car, but it need not be.

The bottom is a breeze, just the horseshoe clip in the front.

Hope this helps.

I'm sure glad you posted those pictures of the seat backs showing the clips. This topic comes up frequently. I often thought pictures would help others understand how to do the '84-'93 but I was just too lazy ro remove one of my seat backs and take pictures. When I saw yours I remembered I had a foam chshion with the rods showing so I went to the shop and found it. Took a picture to go with the 2 you provided. Now next time we need explain this for the '84-'93 C4s we'll have good pictures to go with the excellent '94-'96 instructions.
Thanks for your post and getting me motivated.
Bill

Just a quck caution: Don't do the dumb thing I just did as I removed the entire seat back and then removed the back cushion. When I did this I disconnected the seat release cable at the top reat of the seat. On the inside one has to remove the screw on leeper nuts. This will break off the nuts and to put it all back together you ( at least I) had to glue the pieces together. Really dumb on my part. Really an easy deal that I made difficult.

Background:

I finally received my new seats (all leather mouted on new foam) for my 94 Vette. I ordered the seats thru VIP Corvette which save me about $200.00. The seats did come direct from Corvette America as there was a reference card inside the box as VIP Corvette is a distributer for Corvette America. I am questioning the quality of product thru a distributer vs. going direct to the manufacture. Not sure if anyone else has had this type of problem as discribed below vs. buying a product direct.

Seat Installation:
As the catalog states...just pop them in. To good to be true. As the seat bottoms are a not a problem to install, the seat back installation was. I am not sure if it was the new leather or an oversized foam seat but I could not mate the plastic locking feature (track) to seal (assemble) the back to complete the assembly.

Being discourage.. I let a local car upholster do the job. He could not assemble the back either as I described. He had to cut some foam from the back bottom then hog tie the plastic locking feature together. $225.00 bucks later my seats were installed.

He mentioned that the orginal seats are leather in the front but vinyl on the seat backs, hence easier installation vs. all leather. Anyway....I am just questioning...was saving $200.00 worth it... was the distributer obtaining less than quality product from the manufacture ...hence leading the problems I had. It will be intresting if someone buy's direct (All leather seats already mounted on foam) from the manufacturer vs. a distributer and if they will run into the same problems as I did.

I replaced the seats in my 89 with vinyl on new foam from Wilcox and they were also from Corvette America. I had a little bit of difficulty installing them but I finally got both seats in. Of course it didn't help with the temps being in the 80's and my wife asking me every five minutes if everything was OK. It took me about 1/2 an hour and was well worth the money. I didn't need to cut or alter anything to install them.

Its fairly simple to figure out as you go. I made a post here prior to trying to change mine. Once i started on it, it was fairly simple but i had the help of a friend of mine. The bottom just unclips in front and comes right out. The back unzips and you have to disconnect all the air lines for the pockets in the seat. The foam and all will come right out once that is disconnected. Fitting the new seats will be some work and will take some time. A little patience and elbow grease and you will get em back in in no time!

Default new seats

I just got my new mounted seats from Willcox. I am not too impressed with the quality of the stitching but rather than beat Willcox up here on the forum I will contact them by phone on Monday and see what we can work out.

The ones I got from Eckler's (Corvette America on box) were really very nice in every way. I'm very happy with them.
