No its not normal the RPMs should go down providing your foots off the accelerator. Hmm dont know my guess would be a lazy throwout bearing

Default Dittos on "not normal"...

Assuming the transmission is in neutral (sorry...I couldn't resist ;-) and barring some exotic phenomenon, it sounds like there is sufficient resistance in the transmission to impede the rpm significantly. A agree w/ "GC" that it isn't normal - at least not when compared w/ any stick shift including Corvettes that I've driven in the past 45 years.

So, assuming it the trans that is impeding the rpm, I'm wondering what kind of oil and what weight oil is in the trans? Does this happen only when the engine AND trans are cold? What is the characteristic when both are warm?

From experience, I know that the ZFs are susceptible to oil-related failures and (according to Bill B at ZFdoc.com), something like 90% of transmissions he gets in for repair have lubrication related wear/damage. Therefore, if I understand his web site info, he recommends synthetic oil changes every 15 -20 thousand miles (more often for track cars)...Good luck on finding a 17mm hex wrench to get those @@%$#^%$# plugs outta the tranny! (I got mine at Auto Zone, FWIW )

Anywaaaaaay.....It might just be b/c it has been so cold. Changing oil is easy enough apparently required (in spite of what GM says, in this case! ) You might give that a try, and see how it behaves after the transmission oil is warmed up (after 10-15 min driving).

Well, that's my 2¢. Mebby others will have some more guesses. Good luck!

P.

If you're lugging the engine in a very high gear under ~1000 RPM, your RPMs will return back up to idle position when you depress the clutch. That's the IAC at work.
