Default ECM removal

Does anyone have pics of what panels need to be removed underneath the dash on a 1988, does the carpeted piece come off, I know I sound like a lazy a$$, and probably some are saying , go look for yourself, I have briefly, I got the plastic part off, but I am unable to do anything in that position due to being disabled, I am trying to find out the easiest way so I can instruct my kids to do it, so I can check the prom installed.

Thanx folks

Once you have that carpeted panel removed, you should be able to feel behind the wiring to find 2 bolts which hold the ECM in... they'll be spaced about 6 to 8 inches apart. I think it's metric 10. Once those are out the ECM should be able to be pulled down. Good luck!

Default ECM removal

I took my ECM out of my '88, to put a new chip in.

Once you take the panel off [easy], you can see all the screws [bolts] you have to remove.

The only hard part is getting under there. It's very ackward.

Thanx folks, I guess the problem I am having then is actually removing the carpeted section, I only see 1 screw up by the fuse panel and 2 screws that hold the air vent underneath, and I see no others but the piece doesnt want to budge, and I dont want to just keep pulling to destroy it, am I missing something easy here

Thanx

I don't think its the carpeted section that you have to remove. Its the black plastic piece. Then you can see the ECM, if you lay on your back, on the passenger seat. The carpeted piece is a major PITA to remove.

If I remember right, Just take off the 2 bolts and 2 harnesses, it should slide out.

It is very easy to remove the ecm once that is off, sit along side the car and use a mirror to look up at the two bolts. No need to take the seat out and all that stuff.

Pizzano,
I to am disabled, and have to rely on someone else to do most everything on my car, except for the hand controls, which I did myself. My AC hasn't worked since I bought the car 2 years ago. It may be the vacuum gizmo above the gas pedal, but like you, I need someone to get to there. So, I have decided to go AC delete, as well as air pump delete. I have 3 boys who are always too busy, so I suppose it will have to go to a shop, when I find a reputable one. Good luck! It ain't easy being physically challenged.

Ya I hear ya Rich, sorry to hear of your condition also, Man it was much easier working on my C5 engine wise, hell I installed my whole exhaust headers on back on my 98 with no problem with some help from a good friend , but I was able to mostly lay flat on my back for that , I forgot how these C4's tend to challenge us less fortunate folks as far as servicing goes, but hey, I hate complaining, at least we are on the up side of the earth hey.

It just goes to show that we are all true vette diehards .

Hell I am only 45 and and the upcoming 5th back reconstruction is going to be a devil and i am not looking forward to it , I will probably be out of commision for at least a year this time, the problem is I only have daughters and they really try to help pops out as much as possible for my car work, I hate to bring it to the stealerships, its much more rewarding doing the work our selves

Take care of yourself Rich, and I appreciate your input

Thanx for the pic Wayne

Thanx to all that had input , these forums as usual are great for info and help

Nice picture above. If you can sit on something along side the car this goes pretty well. My back is damaged as well but I still do OK with the car. It is interesting to hear the C5 was easier to work on. I thought it would be more difficult without the calm shell hood. Having to lean over the felders is hell for me.
