The right headlight only partially opened last night so of course I had to check it out this morning. Motors are were refurbished about a month ago and are working ok so I suspected the relay.
When I looked at the relays, they all have a greasy brown sticky gook around the connectors and where the wires go into the connector. I took the connectors out of the right hand relay and cleaned all the gook off the connectors and the inside connection area of the relay.
NOW...what I'm really after. Does anyone know if the brown gook is supposed to be on the relays (some type of old sealant, etc?) OR, is it a sign that the realys are shot and it's time to replace all three??
I am pretty sure that is Dielectric Grease. It most likely is just dirty (dusty) I use it on all my connections including both ends of my sparkplug wires. Using Dielectric grease on electrical connectors helps prevent corrosion and increases reliability
It is a weatherproofing sealant that was used on it from the factory. I'm not sure what the consistency is from the factory, but it definately does get pretty gooey after a few years, so it's probably not silicone grease. I would clean it all off and use some silicone on the connections.
Now for the real problem;
if only one light goes up or down, it's not a relay problem, as both lights get fed the same signal from the same relay. Look into bad or dirty limit contacts inside the headlamp motors.
