Over the past two years, the car has spent more time sitting broken than being driven. Now, I have electrical problems that I just don't have the time to track down and another busted tranny. I was thinking of just parting it out and using the proceeds as a down payment for a 6-speed C5. I figure I could make out pretty well parting it out with everything I have into it.
Re: Considering parting out the '85.. (tntcorvette)
The question will ultimately be answered by how much I think I can get out of the collective parts. I know I can get a decent sum for the Dana 44 and the ported and polished superram. Basically the top end of the motor will bring pretty good $$. I may be able to get a decent offer on the aftermarket fiberglass bumpers. They're immune to warp and fade. The wheels will bring in a few dollars. Beyond that, it would be picking all of the little pieces. I could probably Ebay most of 'em. I need to sit down and make a list of every part I can think of and how much I can reasonably get for it. It may take months to part out, but the car isn't fixing itself and thus is doing me no good now...
It takes time, but parting out a car can bring in alot more money.
I parted out my 88 Irocz and did pretty well. Guys will want all sorts of stuff. When I was finished parting out the car, all that was left was the stripped body, no doors, no hood, no interior, no nothing.
not after spending the money to modify it, i wouldnt sell it i would have to fix it.
I used to feel that way too. Now I'm just sick of never being able to drive it because something *else* just broke. I'd rather get what I can from the parts and put myself in a new C5 that will always start when I turn the key.
I don't really have an answer but I am interested in the post. I have a very nice 84 that I can't seem to generated much interest in. I have had the same thoughts as you and am curious how it would turn out. I talked to a corvette salvage yard and I guess the front suspension and rear ends can bring pretty good money from street rodders. Not to mention the seats.
After looking for some parts on ebay , I told my wife that my car would be worth more in pieces than as a whole. If you have the time and don't mind dealing with the hassles of shipping, etc, I'm sure it would probably be profitable. Good Luck, Guy
Eeeek! Don't do it! That car looks so nice! ...BUT if you do, I can hop down there to Fresno and buy that SR off you! Seriously, if you go through with it. :chevy
I have until March to think about it... That's when my contract is up for review. If my contract is renewed, that'll mean I'll have a job to make the strokes on the new car so I'll definitely be parting it out. If I weren't remodeling my house, I'd have time to fix it and money to save for a down for a new one... the best of both worlds. I don't know if anyone has ever done a remodel, but it's a lot like modding a Vette. You just keep filling buckets with money and carrying them out...
