The 10 amp fuel pump fuse was blowing due to the pump. I replaced the old pump with a carter unit. The last time someone replaced it, they sealed it with a silicone looking goop. Not to much fun to get off. The float unit had a small amount of rust, really not what I expected to find. Is that normal find? Nasty looking stuff.
The instructions for the new wire called for one splice (A black ground) I replaced all the old wires with the new kit, and did the one splice. I used a butt connector with a rubber or plastic exterior. Now I am concerned that may not have been too smart, the connector is going to see fuel. What do you think, should I take it apart and use another splicing method? How will that connector hold up in the tank? Did I screw up?

I would have soldered the connection then slid a piece of "Shrink Tube" insulation over the splice. You do not want any sparks inside your tank.
I thought I would just throw this out there for general information. I went ahead and took the unit back out, and did the solder heat shrink on the harness.
The harness I had was made by Carter. If you have a LT1 and you use the new harness, a splice must be made. (In the fuel tank)
I now notice that RACETRONIX has an install kit for the LT1. The kit includes the gasket, and a wire harness that needs no splicing. The harness looks plug in ready. (Pic on their website) They gave me a price of 29.00
If I had to do it all over again, I would buy the racetronix install kit. Splicing and connecting inside the fuel tank, can be avoided totally with that kit. New wires, and connectors in that nasty environment is
probably a good thing.
