Bilstein can also rebuild your original FX3 shocks. I'm not sure of the price but it is cheaper than new (at least new Bilstein's). You might want to check with them as well.

I had to have one rebuilt about a year and a half ago, because the gear on top broke, the rebuild charge was $140 (because I had to have a new shaft (the broken gear is part of the main shaft). Seems to me that you can have them all four rebuilt for around $250 (if you don't have any broken gears). I'd be for looking into having them rebuilt.
Unless your into autocrossing its pointless to get your shocks rebuilt. I would if you wanted to change your setup and get the Moracca valving which is excellent for autocrossing. The costs at 100.00 min per shock plus whatever else they find along the way does not make the rebuilding process a "good deal" plus what is returned is your unpainted & worn decal nasty old looking shock with just the new internals. Last forum member who did it said he would not do it again as he saved less than $50.00 on the set of four rebuilds. He had a heck of the time finding a paint match to make them look new. The rebuild is just that they just rebuild the internals and do nothing else. And he said the customer service was dubious. I think you would be happier with new especially with 14+ years on the original shocks. But hey your call.

FX3 is the selective ride and handling. It allows adjusting the stiffness of the shocks. Z51 consists of heavy duty suspension parts and fast ratio steering. In 1989 (the first year offered) FX3 could only be ordered with Z51, but Z51 could be ordered without FX3. Eventually FX3 could be ordered as a stand alone option.

Then in 1991 the Z51 designation was dropped in favor of the option # Z07, which basically put the two back together (Z51/FX3), even though the FX3 could be ordered separately.
